Simple, Free, app for simple audio recording and editing?

Here's what I'm trying to do;

Make two or three different "tracks" on a CD for range commands for competitive shooting matches...
For example;
"This event will be 5 shots, timed fire, in 20 seconds... Ready on the Left? Ready on the Right? All ready on the firing line... " Then insert a loud horn.
twenty seconds later, the horn sounds again.

I could use a tape recorder... I even have one somewhere...
But I'd RATHER put it on CD or put it in my iPod!

This will be played through a PA system (I already have the jack-adapter... I think...).

I used CD SPin Doctor to do a quick recording test, but can't figure out how to "edit in" the horn/buzzer/beep.

Tips would be appreciated!

Also,

Paul, if you have installed the developer's tools with 10.4, there is an audio app called AU Lab which might be of use to you.

Here is the description:

AU Lab is a digital mixing application that provides facilities for blending audio from the input of an audio device as well as audio generated by an Audio Unit Instrument or Generator. In addition, AU Lab can host Audio Unit effects and route audio through these effects.
AU Lab application
The AU Lab Application

AU Lab is very efficient and has a very high performance and low overhead audio engine capable of supporting multiple outputs, and advanced routing features such as send buses and sidechain buses.

As the image above illustrates, the application provides MIDI clock facilities for audio units that support host clock synchronization, and an inspector that features a cocoa-based generic view of audio units that do not provide their own custom user interface. This inspector includes full support for preset management, and facilities for MIDI mapping of audio unit parameters.

Although AU Lab provides recording controls, it is not designed to be used for extensive recording. It is mainly designed as a platform reference Audio Unit host, and is designed for Audio Unit auditioning and live applications.

Dick Moore;
I'll check out Audacity...
Thanks!

Dennis;
Hadn't thought of iMovie... I'll check it out when I get home.

Grumpyguy;
Don't have 10.4 at home... I might see if I can find a copy of AU Lab here at work and see if it runs under 10.3.9.

Audacity is excellent. A bit clunky, but excellent.

And you can't beat the free price!

I've got Audacity, but have always been stumped by the fact that it can't save as MP3 directly. I seem to remember that it says something about needing LAME or some such add-on installed to be able to export an MP3. And it didn't offer much help as to how to accomplish that… I haven't tried it in quite some time though.

Can anyone here straighten me out on this?

Mac OS 9 or X

1. Go to the LAME download page.
2. Download the version of LameLib for your operating system.
3. When you have finished downloading, use Stuffit Expander to extract the files. (This may happen automatically.)
4. Save the file called "LameLib" anywhere on your computer.
5. The first time you use the "Export as MP3" command, Audacity will ask you where LameLib is saved.

Thanks josntme,

A link would have been helpful, but I appreciate any help at all!

I found a LAME download page, but with the typical difficulty involved with anything UNIX... It's never clear that what you're downloading is the right thing for your particular situation, and finding the obvious right thing is almost impossible. Sorry to rant. I eventually found a Mac version of LameLib on some guy's DotMac page.

Now it should work, eh?

…Quick test… and, yes!

Later,
John-o
