My new MBpro problem

(Penyyn) from my daughter. 200 GB HD. I would like to remove daughter's photos and data. Problem: HD 183 GB of 186 available.

But stuff doesn't add up. HD Folders only add up to 35GB. Her Home Folder is 48. Does not add up to 183 at all. She has gone to NZ to school. I recovered her stolen laptop from police. She says she thinks her photos are 75GB. Nothing adds up. What am I doing wrong?

Thief did not take her external drive with Time Machine. So she is fine and happy with her brand new MBPro and all saved files. She loves Time Machine. Homeowners insurance too. I am salvaging the Book which was totalled when dropped down the stairs by thief. Seems to work OK. All new sheet metal from eBay.

I bet my story is hard to understand.nuts smiley

In the Terminal type the following command:

du -h -d1

The output will list folders with file size.

Get a little app called "whatsize" It looks at your HD and then shows you a nice diagram of all the files/folders and their size. Very useful.

Edit: Not sure why it gets such low reviews with version tracker... always worked great for me.

WhatSize used to be free, is based on free tools and there are comparable products that are free. The current version is $13 shareware and is not fully functional until the fee is paid. The change offended some people.

For a free alternative, try Grand Perspective.
