Epson R200 going Flaky

I've got an Epson R200 that is about a year old. I use it pretty much for printing on CDs and DVDs. Not to much on paper.

Well, it's starting to act flaky. It tends to spit the tray when starting to print a DVD rather than suck it in a print on it. Then, when it's finished, it seems to try to push the tray father than it can... the tray goes all the way out, but the printer keeps trying to push it further. The printer eventually times out after a few seconds of no more tray movement, the tray hangs there and then flashes the power and paper buttons.

I think it may be having difficulty moving the tray when it is almost all the way out of the tray slot. Like it is slipping or something.

Anyone else had this problem? Is there a cure? A roller or something in there that could be cleaned?

Cheap CD Printing Fix for Epson R200/R300 and the like
There is a well known problem with these printers while printing directly to a cd (one of the main marketing points of this new model).

After 15 or so discs being run through the machine, the tray will slip while going in. After awhile a physical push is needed for the process to even work.

The cause of this is the leading clear plastic edge on the front of the cd tray. This gets worn down and the printer cannot grab it effectively.

The solution i have come up with is simply attatching a strip of tyvek tape to the lip of the tray, and folding it over to the bottom. This will make the lip a bit thicker and easier for the printer to grab. I use tyvek tape because of its durability. Regular scotch tape might work fine but i doubt for very long.

I have done this with great success, i will try to post a pic soon, but its not a very complicated idea...

Its a heck of a lot better than buying a new tray for $10

I am on my third Epson R3xx printer, the two previous R200s started doing what you described after a year's use and both times in the middle of printing our Christmas mailouts of public domain Christmas music. The latest bought two weeks ago is an R320. I have accepted that I have to buy a new one every year. Check fixyourownprinter.com and you will see that it is a common problem.

I don't have any Tyvek tape, nor do I know where to buy any, but put heavy duty packing tape on my CD carrier. It helped a little but not much. When the R320 arrived I tried the new carrier in in the R300 and it didn't work.

Unfortunately Canon doesn't have a competitive printer. They're missing a growing market.

I think you are having the same issue that I experienced. Double check your printer settings to ensure that it is set to print on CD and not paper. I'm not at my computer to give you detailed instructions, but if you go through the settings and find that its set on paper and not CD that you will get the exact printer reactions that you described. In other words the printer is trying to print on paper and is pushing the CD tray out and trying to feed paper. There are two places to check for this setting, I'm sorry I can't give details now. If you PM me, I'll send the details to you later. Also be sure to make sure the paper size is set to A4. It can be frustrating getting all the settings just right and them sometimes it still will not work and I have to reboot the computer and start over. The issue with the tray not feeding is a horse of a different color. I have that issue as well. You just have to give it a nudge at the right moment and it works. BUT it should just work, but doesn't. Anyway, hope that helps. I feel your pain.

I've found that when it first starts it's routine, it spits the tray out a little bit then pulls it back in. Sometimes it spits the tray out too far and the rollers can't make contact with the tray any more. When this happens I quickly (you have a few seconds before it is suppose to go back in) push the tray back in alignment with the arrows. I know this is not a proper fix, but it works for me.

Also makes sure you clean the clear strips on the leading edge of the tray occasionally.
