ipod video disk problem? doesn't show up on desktop in disk mode

I have an ipod video 80gb (5th gen). When powered on, the drive clicks and clicks for about 15 seconds, then shows the sad ipod icon and the url for apple support. I can get it into disk mode, and the computer "sees" it in apple system profiler, but the ipod won't show up in disk utility, itunes, or the finder. I'm also able to get it into diagnostic mode where it passes all the tests (don't know how to get it to do a block scan of the drive, though). USB cable works fine with another ipod, and I've tried different ports on my mac pro.

So...I'm thinking it's probably a bum drive. I'll probably purchase a drive to Compact Flash adapter and use a spare 8gb CF card I have here.

Anyone have another idea of something I should try first?
