Cr@p! My IT dept just upgraded me from MBP to latest MBP...

I didn't realize that the latest MBP doesn't have a Firewire 400 port ... lacking a Firewire 800 cable, is there any way to transfer my stuff from the old MBP to the new one? (Meaning, without having to buy anything-- they've given me a time limit before I have to turn in the old MBP...)

You now can do it via WiFi--or better yet Ethernet cable-Migration assistant.

Firewire 9 pin (FW800)>6 pin (FW400) adapter

The ethernet connection is faster than Firewire anyway. That is the way to go. You can either use migration assistant or you should just be able to turn file sharing on with the one machine and directly connect the two.

Oh, should have said -- I would prefer not to use Migration Assistant, rather would like to clone. The new machine -- they've loaded it with all sorts of stuff, would rather just nuke and pave. How hard is it to get the hard drive out of the new MBPs?

VERY easy!!!

Pop out the Battery and it is there--just a few screws.

Gigabit ethernet should be faster than FireWire 400. A FW800 to FW400 cable should $30 at the local Apple Store if you can not wait for the $5 one from Monoprice ($8 to $10 with S&H).

Though more difficult to get the hard drive out from older MBP's. A FW800 to FW400 adapter may be easier.

Got a SATA to USB 2.0 adapter handy?

The drives are easily removed from the new MBP.

It depends on a lot of things but your clone might not boot. You may be forced to use Migration Assistant.

Well, it's not that I wouldn't want a new MBP (sure, I would!) but... remember this isn't my machine, belongs to the institution, they are just leasing to me... in that sense, it's a forced upgrade... don't think I can refuse it. The lack of a FW400 port is going to be a bit of a problem when I sync data between it and my home machine (at the moment, a QS). So I may end up having to get the 400-800 adapter anyway.

I do have a USB2.0 SATA case that I can put the drive into, so I can at least clone the drive over immediately. I've asked the IT dept if they have the 400-800 adapter, but it's unlikely... they are almost entirely PC guys.

FWIW, the Seagate Mac edition external HD's come w/ a FW800 to FW400 cable if you can talk IT into getting you a Time Machine backup drive....

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Best not to nuke and pave the new machine and then clone from the old machine. Might be missing machine specific files. Use migration assistant via ethernet.

The best solution is to get the FW800 to 400 cable. It will fill the current need and be available for later use. You WILL need it in the future. You just don't know why or when.

Best solution is to send me MBP and old drive and I'll send you my FIREWIRE Macbook in return.

Installation included!

When the new mac came out I remember there was much talk about the lack of a Firewire. I hate the way they have carved up the macs. I'm glad I had an old one to give my daughter with all the ports.
