Photo: The WTF??!-cycle

On the way to my local pet supply store in my peculiar Brooklyn, NY neighborhood,
I spotted this bicycle, which, having been unnaturally merged with another metallic entity,
can only be described as a WTF??!-cycle. Looks like it's fun to ride. ;-)

Must be for riding around and posting ads / signs up higher than the competition. I see they have a fold-down support brace on the back.

Mikebw, that makes sense, although the front of the bike would be unstable even if braced. I'd hate to be the one to climb up that ladder or ride the bike too--it looks like the rider's lower back would be jammed up against the ladder steps.

The rider sits on top and pedals with stilts.

Steering might be a problem, though. Maybe he uses ropes.

Looks like that extra piece folds down to serve as an extra brace-- thinking this may be someone who genuinely rides around and uses the bike as a ladder. Roofer? Tree trimmer? Gutter guy?

Or maybe it's a taxi, and that's seating for passengers.

Doesn't really make sense to me. Looks unstable, even with the brace. And, if it's used for any type of work, where does one carry their tools?

I have long been of the opinion that if work were such a splendid thing the rich would have kept more of it for themselves.

Some odd conclusions considering nobody knows the purpose of the combo.

But (and this is blatant speculation) I bet it's stable enough for the guy/gal that uses it. Use the cable lock to lash the handlebars to the ladder or tree and it would be pretty stable.

Maybe not stable enough for watch repair or neurosurgery, but certainly stable enough for many other endeavors like urban surveillance, gutter cleaning, etc.

A back pack could be adequate for carrying any number of tools.

Before I pronounce this guy as a Darwin Award Contender, I'd like to know what he does.

Need a step-through as it might me a little tough to swing your leg over the back.

The more I look at it, the only thing I can conclude is that the setup is only for transporting the ladder, and the ladder is removable for use. The mounting brackets (especially the front, a lot of leverage on that one) just don't seem strong enough to support the weight of a person on that ladder.

I think it should be "what she does". It looks like a ladies' bike to me.

I should have said what "he/she does" as I previously mentioned "guy/gal". And I figured that only the most insecure man would have a "boy's bike" and suffer swinging his leg over the top bar every time.

The mounting brackets (especially the front, a lot of leverage on that one) just don't seem strong enough to support the weight of a person on that ladder.

I had thought the same thing on all counts, but I couldn't see a convenient way to secure and release the ladder easily.

But in looking again, even though I don't see any such method, the brackets don't look to be capable of hold much more weight than the ladder itself. That front bracket looks especially fragile.

Disagree . . . looks like a very professional fabrication to me.

That's what I thought as well, probably more stable like that than strapped over the rider's back.

Disagree . . . looks like a very professional fabrication to me.

I didn't say unprofessional, though I don't know that it is. I said fragile, and probably not able to support the weight of somebody on the ladder.

The front bracket appears to be clamped via two bolts and nuts around that one top tube. The aft bolt might go through the tube, I can't tell. That doesn't seem like sound engineering.

The piece on which the ladders "front" legs rest on appears to be held on by two screws/bolts and nothing more. I can see how this could support a lightweight aluminum or fiberglass ladder, but the hardware just doesn't seem up to bearing the weight of a body.

Yeah, that's all supposition, but unless the hardware is make from some Kryptonian alloy or it's a four-year old climbing that ladder, it just doesn't seem strong enough to bear significant weight.

Maybe it's "art" -- no utility whatsoever -- created only to get people talking about it.

Actually Seacrest gets the prize. :-)

As I discovered, the bike was parked outside of an art gallery that had a one-person show
going on, works by an artist named William Lamson.

In one darkened room was a video installation, where, on parallel half-screens, a video was
being projected that showed the following: [www.youtube.com]

His other work was also fascinating -- I exchanged a photo of mine for a drawing made by
a device made from a Sharpie tied by a string to a floating balloon and buffeted by a white
ceiling fan. [www.youtube.com] burnout smiley

Given his limited and very specific agenda, I'm sure the artist has easily avoided problems
like that. Besides, he has a car and has a friend shooting HD video of him from his car
while he is bicycling around (look at the video).

I think the whole thing was very cool--very well conceived and performed.

I spoke to the artist and showed him the thread on my iPhone.
He was excited and asked me to email the link to this thread
for his blog. He is a Mac user BTW--had a MacBook Pro set up
in one of the gallery rooms where he was doing the exchange-
a-balloon-drawing-for-a-gift thing. At the moment of exchange,
he captured a photo of both the drawing and the gift next to
each other with a Canon DSLR tethered to his MBP, and displayed
the gifts on a wall of shelves. He has received quite a fabulous
and growing collection of doodads and what-nots.

What I found interesting about all this was that he had devised
a collection of "algorithms" to generate art. All of the pieces
could be abstracted to a set of instructions to follow, which he
then implemented with great discipline.

I cannot watch the video at this moment, but the first thing that struck me was the utility of that - it's perfect for transporting flat art work (although the "easel" on the rear should be turned upside down). When I return home, I want to see what this is about...
