Basic animation for 11 year old

My 11 year old boy is looking to experiment with animation (specifically, take some of his drawings, scan them, and animate). Can anyone point me to a good resource?

I would be interested as well, as my 11 year old is expressing an interest in game programming/creation.

This is free, though it only does animated gifs:

Is he looking for a program that will animate it? So he can learn about animation? If so then check out using flash to animate the scanned drawings... there are several basic books for doing this out there,

Not really what you're looking for, but an old video camera and iStopMotion is pretty cool for stop-motion animation (ie claymation and the like)
