Google Voice by Invitation Only
Posted by: kap

Does it mean I have to wait to be invited by Google, or I could get an invitation from someone who already has a Google Voice account?

If so, I would like a invitation please, if someone has one.

I think you have to register at google voice and then Google sends an invitation. I know they sent out some this last weekend.

What is the reason behind the by invitation only? Servers can't handle a large number of users all at once? Google has to check with the NSA first?

As Google's handing out "free" phone numbers, they probably have to match the users with the available numbers, roughly.

Google Voice is very cool, but it's gotten sluggish and occasionally undependable for me, with its growing popularity, I guess.

However, I'd hate to be without it.

I'd love to try it and have an invite, but there are no local numbers in my area code yet.

How do we find out if there is a local number in our area?

During the signup process (after receiving invite) you have to select a number. I don't think its something you can do before you get an invite.

You should have the option to change your number down the road if/when they add local numbers in your area (at least I currently have the option to change my Google Voice number).

Is there any cost to all of this? Man, I have a gazillion questions. I can hardly wait to use the service!

I think I read somewhere on the google voice forums or FAQ that there would be a $10 fee to change numbers. But I don't have a link and don't remember for sure what I read.
