Recommendations for Inexpensive PC Laptop for IE Browser Testing

It seems like overkill to buy a PC (and go to the dark side) simply for the purpose of testing browser compatibility for web development... but I don't like the other choices for now (including running Windows on my MacBook).

Space is a factor, so I just want to get an inexpensive laptop, doesn't need to be real light or small since I won't be traveling with it. I just want one with a keyboard and pad that won't break after a month. But otherwise my needs are low.

(I thought of getting a desktop with a KVM switch, but since I have a 2048 x 1152 DVI monitor, the KVM switches are really pricey).

Suggestions??? for that cheapo low-powered, but reliable PC laptop?

There are online services that test the site and let you see what it looks like. Unless tis is your way to rationalize the netbook :-)

Only thing is that it's Vista. But if that's not a problem, I can't imagine finding anything cheaper than this in terms of a full size notebook.

pinkoos,

Thanks... that looks great.

Anything about that Vista Home edition that would prevent me from installing alternative disk images for testing different versions of IE as per MS's free disk images for testing program. Here is the link to "Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC." It says there under system requirements "Vista," doesn't say, "Professional version" etc. Do you think that would work?

Ken Sp... I've tried those; I hate them... for various reasons. And no, I'm not thrilled about getting a PC, but maybe a little intrigued.

From experience? If not, just get VMware Fusion and go. If yes, what problems did you have?

Article Accelerator,

Okay, I'm downloading VMware Fusion trial as we speak. And my discovery today that MS does not charge for VPC images of XP and Vista running different versions of IE for use by developers for testing... -- I'm willing to give this route a try. Thanks for the encouragement.

Why NOT just run windows on the Mac? If you're THAT concerned about heebie jeebies, run the windows partition off of an external disk.....

even if you get a pc, you'd need to run vpc on it to test against various versions of IE

I'm sold. I'm testing out VMWare.

I was bummed to see that Microsoft's offer for "free" images to test against different versions requires you to own at least one copy of Windows sad smiley. So that's in the mail and I'll check out VMWare Fusion when that arrives.

Thanks for the encouragement.
