Upgraded my MBP to SL, nice improvement

Upgraded my early 2008 MBP to Snow Leopard last night. Install went very smoothly and took about 25 minutes. I gained over 15 gigs of hard drive space and it is noticeably faster. My airport connection is more reliable and my battery charge shows 100%, before it never got over 99%. CS3 works fine as does Quark 7 so I'm happy.

I haven't played with any of the new features yet.

So far, worth the $24.99.

Happy here too as well, and on the same machine (I think.) Especially since my kids shut the lid during install and I had to wake it back up to finish.

I got a black screen with "an opening" in the middle revealing the login screen. Logged in and it continued.

Haven't played around too much. I noticed that the Applescript folder has been banished and that Script Editor is now "Applescript Editor" in the Utilities folder.

Finder calculates folder sizes much faster in List view. If it's a long list it won't do the ones hidden until you scroll to reveal those folders.

> I gained over 15 gigs...

Remember that the new OS calculates file/volume sizes differently.

You probably only freed up around 6-7GB by the old measure.

same MBP....

definitely like the improved startup and shutdown times.

Haven't seen it as a feature, but unofficially, my battery charge seems to last longer.

Before, surfing on the patio, drinking a beer might get me 2 to three hours. The other day 4....

It does calculate file sizes differently, but not by that much.

Drive manufacturers deliberately mess with their advertised sizes to mislead the general pubic into thinking they're getting more capacity than they are. They do this by pretending that drive-sizes are calculated in round decimal numbers instead of binary.

In practical terms, when they do this, they'll sell you a "500GB" drive that -- by traditional calculations -- can only hold 465GB.

When people connect a supposedly 500GB drive to a Mac (or PC) and see that it's really 465GB, they often feel ripped off and really really stupid people blame the operating system for "eating" the 35 "missing" GB.

So, to cater to ignorant stupid people who can't bother to learn the simplest facts of computing, Apple changed the way that the OS calculates sizes so that now the 465GB drive appears to be 500GB.

...But it's still only 465GB. It'll fill up just as quickly.

Drive-makers, Steve Jobs and a few really really stupid people are the only ones happy about this.

Marketing, as Doc described.

really really stupid people
and
So, to cater to ignorant stupid people who can't bother to learn the simplest facts of computing,

Pretty harsh.

I'll buy "ignorant". Computing is still *magic* to a lot of Consumer Public, who are the prey of manufacturers and retailers.

If some people are shown the man behind the curtain and refuse to admit he's there, then stupid would make sense.

But for most that info is minutiae that's not nearly as obvious as the 17" (15.9" viewable) crap that became the standard in TV and monitor advertising.

Other manufacturers will follow suit eventually, and only cranky geeks will sit around the @#$%& barrel sayin' "Son, I was into computers back when 500G was really only 465G, and they actually made drives as small as 500g! And I remember when 1T was just a gleam in your daddy's eye!"
