OT: Losing another pet... sigh.

When they call back, I'm taking our little black Pomeranian, Gretchen, in to the emergency vet to... sigh... release her from her pain. She developed a systemic infection, became septic, and her vet says her immune system is too badly compromised for her to survive it. We thought she was rallying, but took a turn for the worse, and now she's in and out of consciousness and sinking fast. And when she's conscious she's in pain. She's only 10 years old, but hasn't been doing too well the last couple of years.

I don't want to do this, but I can't let her die like this, in such pain and suffering.

We will miss her.

Oh, that's so sad. I'm sorry for your loss, but know that you are doing the right thing. Ending the painful suffering is the best that you can do for her, be with her, if you can. You will have fond memories of her.

Poor Gretchen, that's very sad. But better not to let her suffer as you already know.

Oh man, so sorry.
In a similar situation, I believe most of us will break our hearts to do what is best of our best friend.

Just passed the one-year anniversary of putting our Pepper down, and it still hurts. But you got to do the right thing. Hang in there in.

Been there, done that. You know it's the best thing, but that does not make it any easier or make it feel any better. I'm sorry for your loss. Enjoy the great memories.

You have my deepest sympathy. You are doing the right thing, a very painful thing, but the right thing, nontheless.

Know that you are doing the right thing. Take comfort in knowing that dogs have no sense of the future - they live in the now - and if now is not fun, making it stop is the right thing.

update- my wife was holding her while we were waiting for the vet to call, and she quietly died in my wife's arms. So she was completely at peace when she died, in the loving arms of her human Mommy. Somehow that makes it a bit easier....

I now what you're feeling. i had to put my doggie down a long time ago for similar reasons.

Think about the love you gave her and let that console you.

What a wonderful conclusion to what must have been a great companionship. Our little friends do leave a hole in our hearts when they leave us. May the good memories ease the pain of the loss.

So sorry to hear of your loss, but how comforting to know that Gretchen was in the best possible place for her last moments. My condolences.

I always feel the heartbreak when someone loses such a special ”person“ because isn't any beloved pet a person in our lives? So much a part of your life, so much giver of joy… it really breaks me up because I know the feeling.

Please, if you can, save another poochie from euthanasia and explain to it that it's getting saved up love from Gretchen. It will help to mend your sadness, I'm sure.

Best wishes,

GeneL

Going thru this just two days ago with my Siberian Husky Cody, I certainly still feel your pain. My thoughts are with you through this difficult time. In time the positive memories will prevail.

My college buddy lost his beloved dog, Lena, this week.

I'm sure Gretchen is having a fantastic romp in the great beyond:
