I don't see why Toyota doesn't ship every Prius with these
Posted by: Grateful11

The salesperson showed us the very nice aluminum wheel behind the
plastic wheel cover. So I Googled it and found a part number for the
center caps. I read over all the threads about replacing the covers that I
could find and everyone said the MPG difference was nil. Personally I
think it looks much better. I'm a little concerned someone might try and
steal them thinking they're some sort of special order wheel. Might have
to get a set of wheel lock lugs for it. The center caps did cost me $60 for
4 and they're a special order item.

They sure are. The sales guy I deal has been at the same dealer for over
10 years and he's been asking why ever since the Prius came out but
hasn't gotten an answer yet.

I'd rig them with plastique. That will teach the wheel thieves a thing or two!

Those Toyota pukes too (if you forget to remove it!).

Those must have been standard on my Highlander Limited. I just came in from the garage to make sure they were really there; I'd never actually noticed!

Have you checked to see how the wheel lock lugnuts will affect your mpg?

There had to be at least 2 grams of brake dust behind each cover so you
can only imagine how much gas it save me when I got rid of that.

How so? They're a lot cleaner design than the stock prius wheels.

That has to be like a 35 series tire. My sons Scion has 45 series and they
ride rough enough I can't imagine riding on those.

I would not tolerate a tire with that low profile. They may look great, but the ride and the load on the shocks and the rest of the suspension are not acceptable.

I have no idea what any of you guys are talking about here.
And I worked at an auto dealership, listen to hour or two of auto podcasts a day, own a Prius, and was around funny car builders and other race car builders during my formative years.

Well it started with me removing the plastic wheel covers and popping in
the caps, then it turned into a custom wheel thread with low profile tires
that ride like solid tires and if you hit nearly any debris in the road it's
probably going bend or break your wheel.

so the first photo is how your Prius came?
And you then removed the hubcap? Hence the second photo?
That is the wheel underneath/behind the hubcap? I have never seen an non steel wheel covered up like that. Why do they do that?
And lastly you put a center cap over the middle hole? They MAKE a center cap for it?
Sounds like Toyota is doing it backwards to me.

I couldn't agree more, neither can the dealerships. To me that's a great
looking wheel under there, why they do it is beyond me. I think the
center cap is actually a Camry part. I just Googled "Prius Center Cap"
and found a part number and ordered them. If you don't put the center
cap on you have look at the end of the threaded spindle.

In the end, it looks better than before. But it is beyond me WHY Toyota does that.

I don't think you guys knocking the low profile tires have noticed the car is sitting lower. It's on an upgraded suspension which may very well ride better than stock.

Car may ride better, except on rougher road surfaces. But, the tires and wheels are more subject to damage from any holes in the road or debris on it. Too little sidewall to flex and absorb those impacts.

I think the typical Prius driver can't park very well, so Toyota wanted to use a light wheel, but include a cover to protect from user inflicted curb damage.

I know a lot of people with low profile tires. That rarely happens. And when it does, take a picture of the debris or pothole and contact the city for them to pay for the repair or replacement.

That said, without the sloppy sidewall flex, the car will respond more quickly and you should be better able to avoid such holes or debris. So although they may be more likely to be damaged, they're less likely to be in a position where damage may occur (if the driver has any skills.) Overall you end up with a safer vehicle.
