OT: Went to buy eye glasses - Sticker Shock!
Posted by: Dennis S

I haven't bought any since 1993 and went to Lens Crafters and Sears - $300-400, not including the exam. I was expecting well under $200. Is there any place where they are under $200 for no-line bifocals?

For Eyes (they are a national chain). I have bought my glasses there for YEARS and have never had a problem. Their prices can't be beat but they don't offer 1hr service.

Don't they do the exam for "free?"
(Yes, I do realize that "free" means the cost is built into the price of the eyeglasses.)

And this is your eyesight we're talking about, why skimp?
It's cheaper than buying a larger TV or monitor.

sears had a $99 no line bifocal sale a few weeks ago. also, since you've saved $200 a year for 13 years, by not getting new glasses, you can get a new G5 tower AND a pair of glasses now and still are ahead of the game...

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Time for soft contacts. They have them now you do not take out for a month. Astigmatism, bifocal and strong etc. I have been wearing them for thirty years and cannot wear glasses because the vision is not as good and dizzying. $14-$25 a month for replacements and I get to wear cool sunglasses and exercise without fogging.

would you trust your eyes to a company that uses 'KEWL' as ad copy? they must have hired some myspace kids to do their site...

I can't wear contacts.

Do you have AAA membership? AAA members gets 30% off at Lenscrafter.

That being said, I've always been shock at the prices of glasses.
Even at $300, the frames are only so-so.

I went to Taiwan three weeks ago, and went to a store, and picked up a pair of really nice designer glaases for ~$150 or so. The glasses is so light, you don't even realized that you are wearing them.

Another vote for Costco - progressive bifocals with frame come in right around $200 -- and single vision can be well under $100 - great warranty too!

Costco. Just got 2 pair of glasses and exam for $225 out the door. One caveat, had to wait over a week for the glasses to arrive.

Glasses have always been one of the best markup items in retail. My Dad did some design work for Oakley back in the Irridium lense days. Found out that their cost per unit at the time was $2.69 for sunglasses that retailed for $80-120 everywhere.

I recently bought a new pair of glasses at Lenscrafters while I was in Hawaii. I also felt the sticker shock. I paid $300 for a Ray Ban frame with polycarbonate lenses and scratch resistant coating. You can't beat the 1 hour service though.

I am talking "soft contacts" not the irritating hard ones. Literally like a drop of water on each eye and like I said I am a thirty year user with legal blindness that improves to better than 20/20.

J C Penney runs specials for $110 +, so I'll check them out, as well as Sam's. Costco is too far.

The glass I wanted at 39dollarglasses.com were $188.

I've tried every type of contacts, and I just can't wear them. They irritate my eyes too much, no matter how long I let them break in.

Another vote for Costco, if at all possible.

In Consumer Reports last month, they did a comparison of 18 nationwide options, and Costco came out on top for price/service and ACCURACY.

Ever occur to you that even if the doc gets the prescription nailed down, will the lab actually make the lens right the first, or second time?

As an example, the local one has an independant doc who charges I believe $65 for an eyeglass exam, and for me, high index high correction lenses will be $75. Even the super high index lenses with all the frilly options will be $115.

They also have a 30 day no questions asked return policy. For instance your girlfriend thinks the frames look stupid.

I'm glad to see all the support for Costco. I need an exam and new glasses, too.

Unfortunately contacts don't work for everyone, and I'm one of those. I wore them for over 10 years, but I always had to have monovision, which didn't serve me well when I had to do lots of close work. So sad. I hate glasses. sad smiley

Their ad has been that way forever, it is weird. I know
plenty of people that have gone to them and not one complaint.

I know what you mean; been wearing glasses since 1964.
I've decided to have Lasik done on the eye with the bad aestigmatism & just wear a contact in the other eye.

I've seen much higher than 300% (from source to consumer)

In 1987, a certain plastic ladies frame that Pearl Vision sold for $140.00 without lenses could be purchased from the same Chinese source for $0.97/ea per 5,000, fitted with polycarbonaate safety lenses and sold as eye protection (meeting all ANSI specs.) for under $4.00. (4 buck consumer price).

Costco:

Trifocals w/polycarbonate lenses, uv & scratch-resistant coating
Half-rimless titanium frames
One week wait

Total cost $182

My previous pair at Pearle (identical): $380

If you don't have a Costco, try [eyeglassdirect.com]

coworker was happy with them and their prices.
