OT: Book excerpts from the NBA ref busted for gambling

He may be a convicted criminal but what I read, I have to say it is plausible on why NBA games seems so wackily officiated.

We had another variation of this gag simply referred to as the "first foul of the game" bet. While still in the locker room before tip-off, we would make a wager on which of us would call the game's first foul. That referee would either have to pay the ball boy or pick up the dinner tab for the other two referees. Sometimes, the ante would be $50 a guy. Like the technical foul bet, it was hilarious — only this time we were testing each other's nerves to see who had the guts to hold out the longest before calling a personal foul. There were occasions when we would hold back for two or three minutes — an eternity in an NBA game — before blowing the whistle. It didn't matter if bodies were flying all over the place; no fouls were called because no one wanted to lose the bet.

Part of the reason I quit watching basketball is because the refs so often seemed biased.

Football is getting that way for me. Having a DVR doesn't help... I can watch the replay more times than the official.

Of course he does, he is a rat, but that big rat Jose Canseco actually ended up being right about steroids.

But he was right about something that really doesn't matter. Wasn't against any rules and wasn't illegal. Probably most of these guys did it. Donaghy on the other hand, was a true low life. I think he's exaggerating but it's not like everyone doesn't know that ref's have their favorites and that veterans get the calls. And then Donaghy acts as if something like a team being cold or playing poorly has nothing to do with the outcomes of these games.

Steroids are illegal and they were prohibited under MLB rules. MLB just didn't test for it.

Could this guy be playing it up? Sure, but the excerpts don't seem out of the real of reality to me. Some games I covered through my years on the baseline left me with many head scratching moments that made no sense. The paragraph about the first guy to call a foul pays the tip is very plausible to me.

Jose was less a rat than he was just plain stupid and a crappy fielder to boot. At Fenway I watched him catch a high fly ball using his forehead as a mitt.

I know it seems like they did pRICE, but they didn't.

Prior to 2002, Major League Baseball had "no" policy on steroids usage. In 2003 the owners and players came up with a mild policy, which they have strengthened over the years.
