and how can I at least make an Alias of it show up on the Desktop? I can't ever remember it not being
automatically placed there.

Just go to Finder --> Preferences --> General and check "Hard disks"

Cool! Thanks! I'm getting there with this new OS! I'm even trying to like Safari.

I'm not sure why iLeader allowed that to be shipped as not selected....afterall it's been on every generation of macs since 1984.

All I ever really needed to know, I learned from watching Star Trek.

I've been using Macs since '95 and it's always been there waiting for me. I was kind
of like WT.

I'm actually glad Snow Leopard does not automatically plop external drives on my Desktop. Mac user since very early 90s. I was fine with the old behavior in the classic Mac OS. OS X is a different beast. Every icon on the desktop is a waste of resources. And with Spotlight, I don't directly use the Finder nearly as much as the old days.

An icon on the desktop is a "waste of resources." Are they in such short supply?

Each icon is actually a Finder window. Ever notice how the Finder can feel sluggish with dozens of icons on the desktop?

I've used Mac OS since about 7.5. I prefer not to have the icon on the desktop. Hitting command+n is easier for me than double clicking on an icon.

The more stuff on the Desktop, the more work for the Finder, and the longer the Startup time, the longer.... The Desktop is a folder, just like any other folder, except it is always visible.

Mr. Curmudgeon, on several OSes and an ego trip.

I've done that, but to no avail. Then, I used Cocktail to show invisible items, and there it was, on the desktop at least. So, now the task is how to make the Macintosh HD visible again. Went to FIle Buddy, searched for all invisible files, highlighted Macintosh HD, clicked Get Info, was told I'd need to make it visible and was given the option to do that. After that, Macintosh HD showed up on desktop but not in Finder sidebar. Relaunched Finder, and there it was.

Jesus. That wasn't easy.

No idea how it became invisible, but it's nice to have it back.
