comcast + ROKU/Netflix, how much bandwidth am I using?
Posted by: space-time

I got a ROKU about a week ago, and we watch maybe 1 hour of Netflix Video on Demand per day, and sometimes we let Pandora play for an hour or so. I wonder how much bandwidth I am using, I heard that comcast will monitor the usage and to against their top users. I am not sure if there is a way to check network using with comcast. I guess I could install Tomato on my router and monitor the usage there, but would be better if there was another quick way to check monthly/weekly/daily usage.

thanks

Open up activity monitor and click on the network tab.

Note what the current received data is.

After you watch a program for say an hour, take a look at what the new reading is.

You should be able to get a feel for how much bandwidth you're using.

I'll bet Netflix is heavily compressed...

but I watch movies from netflix and listed to pandora using a ROKU box, which has nothing to do with my OS X laptop. It connects directly to the router.

I wonder about that, myself.

I often stack 5 or 6 tv shows in a row on Hulu and let them play for background-noise... maybe 4-5 times a week.

I've seen figures between 450-500MB per hour-long show from Hulu. If so, I'm hitting a maximum of 2.5GB per day or 12.5GB per week or 50Gb per month from Hulu, alone.

...Which leaves plenty of room before I hit the ceiling.

(Netflix's HD streams are supposed to be twice the bandwidth of Hulu's 480p streams, so double that for comparable Netflix use.)

Edit: Bad math. Baaad math. And let's leave out the errata.

True, I forgot about that, but you can still watch Netflix movies on your computer. Wouldn't they have the same size files?

How about just calling Netflix tech support and asking them? They're actually pretty helpful.

Figure about 1GB per hour for SD video and end up on the high side. DVDs are higher and much streaming content is typically much lower.

The one iTunes movie I have is about 85 min per GB.

Comcast has a new metering thing.

thanks, will download this just to monitor how much I use from my laptop, but the ROKU and 2 (soon to be 3) VOIP boxes have nothing to do with this app, right?

My router (Asus wl-520gu) has tomato dd-wrt installed. I get realtime and 24 hour graphs and it keeps weekly and monthly averages as well.

It looks like this:

Maybe you can monitor through your router or your dsl/cable modem?

This link refers to Comcast's bandwidth monitoring.

It has some suggestions for software that may be compatible with many routers. Applications may be PC only though.

Argh space-time. You have the same Asus router w/tomato!

Log onto it and you can watch bandwidth usage from any browser.

I am not running that router. In fact I am about to give it to my Dad and I got a nice Apple Airport Extreme for myself (but I haven't set it up yet). Right now I use a buffalo with original firmware.

Use your neighbor's WiFi and stop worrying.
