There are things I don't understand about shipping...

I am waiting on my last Christmas present to arrive. It is scheduled to get here tomorrow by UPS, I hope. Here is the last part of the tracking info from UPS:

12/21/2005 17:39:00 IN TRANSIT TO GA DORAVILLE

12/21/2005 17:38:00 DEPARTURE SCAN SC WEST COLUMBIA

12/21/2005 12:46:23 LOCATION SCAN SC WEST COLUMBIA

12/20/2005 21:25:00 DEPARTURE SCAN GA HAPEVILLE

12/20/2005 18:20:00 ARRIVAL SCAN GA HAPEVILLE

12/20/2005 11:14:00 DEPARTURE SCAN CA ONTARIO

12/20/2005 06:20:06 LOCATION SCAN CA ONTARIO

I know that FedEx takes everything to Memphis, but unless UPS now takes everything to West Columbia SC, which they may, why did my package go there? Hapeville is about 45minutes from my house and about 20 minutes from Doraville where they shipped to from West Columbia.
Why would they send it to SC just to send it back to GA. I just don't get it. I hope it shows up tomorrow, it was 3 day shipping and they say on-time, but I'm thinking it may be Friday. Who knows.

It's all based on things coming and going from various regional hubs and sorting facilities. It seems crazy to get so close to you and send it away again, until you consider that they are moving tons of stuff around and to stop and sort through it to see if by chance somebody lives nearby -- and then send it to you in its own truck -- would make that package cost a small fortune to deliver.

I remeber how my shuffle started out in Ontario, I think, a couple hundred miles north of here, then went to California before coming back here.

My first iPod left China, went to Alaska, then back to China before finally arriving in the lower 48.

$tevie, I agree, but you would think that the Atlanta airport (hapeville) would be a hub before West Columbia, SC. Especially since the world headquarters of UPS is in Atlanta. Just seemed strange to me.

For usps. . .they make mistakes. . .I once shipped something from ny to Maine. . .they shipped it via California. . .huh?

Another time same thing. . .they shipped via the other side of the country. . .someon probably saw the zip code incorrectly?

Pat, that may be it. I'm sure they could get more for less across the SC border.

Hmm. I can't refer to the original routing info at this late time, but maybe you're right. Imagine, Californians disguising themselves as Canadians.

Yeah. My brother always gets his boss to pay him in person rather than mailing him his check (he's in construction) If he mails it (they live about 20 minutes apart) it will take sometimes longer than a week to get to him. Simply b/c all the mail in this bumblefuckville town goes to the big city an hour away where its sorted and then sent BACK to the town to be delivered.

In the other forum, I complained recently about some UPS packages that arrived late because on the day that the packages were supposed to arrive -- and were, in fact, listed as out for delivery -- they decided for some reason to send the packages to a neighboring state and back.

There was an e-mail circulating awhile ago about what would happen if we strove for only 99% efficiency. For example, if the post office were only 99% efficient then tens of thousands of packages would be lost or mis-routed every year.

I think UPS is about 98% efficient.

Indeed they do. So does UPS, who's shipping rg's package (no DE, it's early for me).

I ordered three DVDs from amazon and used standard shipping because it was "faster" than the free Budget grade.

Amazon chose to ship one USPS and the others Airborne/DHL.

The USPS item was received two days later, and the other two won't be here until "...after Dec. 24."

I rely on USPS.

All the other guys- not so much.
