There are a bunch of sellers out there. I would like a recommendation from you guys before I just pick one at random.

Are you speaking of the flexible foam surround of a woofer?

More info please. Really old with the inverted cloth roll? A list of sources would help, etc.

Large Advents from the late 1970's. The foam rots away from the outside of the woofers.

Foam rot was a major problem in the 70's we tried to extend the speakers life with glue. I rebuilt some 14" altecs (I think) ten years or so ago. The kit was from an ad in Stereo Review and was straight forward and successful. If you like the sound, go for it.

I got mine (for the Larger Advent) from the same magazine, from an ad in the back. I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the company.

However, one of the voice coils had extended far beyond the normal length of travel and could not be repaired. I've never tried to find a replacement speaker, but I'd like to.

The repaired speaker sounds as good as ever, though I've outgrown the sound for more critical listening. But it's such a small investment for new surrounds that it would be a shame to let the speaker die otherwise.

Wow these bring back some memories. My folks had a pair of Original Advents (the later name for the Large Advent) from the late '70s, near the end of the main run. Nice walnut cabinets. I had a pair of Advent/1s —same setup but in a little bit smaller, vinyl box. Gave 'em away to a friend years ago. None are sonically competitive with today's speakers of similar adjusted-cost.

But I think for that price you'd have to *really* want it.

I repaired my walnut ones years ago, although I put the foam on backward. I have another pair to do, but I have the foam and have already done one of them. My friend wants me to order a pair for him, but I wasn't sure where to get them. They are all over the net, but I figured someone here had bought some and had a good recommendation for a seller.
