If you could visit any city in the world for 7 days, where would you go?

Let's pretend you have a week of free lodging in a fixed location, nearly anywhere in the world. You have to pay for transportation, and you are free to do whatever you want once you get there. Where would you go?

Hmmm. Probably Como Italy. The alps in Austria are just a few minutes away by car.

I haven't been there since 1995 but I will return one day.

Why a CITY?

And sorta related, I just spent the last hour taking and printing passport photos for our first passports.

I wish iPhoto had a "Print Passport Photo" button.

Why a CITY?

Because that's where you are most likely to find lodging. Most people live in buildings, and most of those buildings are grouped in to areas we call cities.

I don't think I'd want to spend an entire week in just one city.

If I had to pick it might be Florence Italy. There are enough other places within an easy train ride to keep things interesting.

There are so many choices it'd depend on the season and my mood at the moment. Right now I'm thinking Monte Carlo. Cannes, Paris, or Venice would be OK too. However, I've been to all those cities...Barcelona and Sydney would be top of my list for places I haven't visited yet.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Tough one.
I wouldn't want to waste it on a place I've been already, but of course I can't recommend a place I haven't been.
Of the places I've been it would be either London or Amsterdam though.

Probably Paris. I've lived there twice and never tire of it. Still lots left to explore.

But right now I have a hankering for Disney World/Universal Studios, so it might be Orlando.

Prague's a good choice too. Have not been there yet.

Good luck.

I'd go for Venice, Italy.

I was there once (rather a small town just outside Venice) for a scientific conference. It was very enjoyable.

Paris (never been,)
Dubai (never been -sure I could find things to do there)
Rome, although I'll be there this Summer, again finally, although, again for just a day. :-(
How about a nice quiet Greek island instead of a city ?
Plunk me down in Norway,Sweden, Finland, Denmark -I could make a long list of things to do real quick and not cross everything off the list in just a week.
Sidney or Auckland , if it's Winter here.

Better be a 5 star hotle and include meals.
Air fare could easily equal or surpass free lodging.

Paris, and I'll be doing just that to celebrate my 25th anniversary in a couple of months. I've been many times but never tired of the city. I was tempted to choose someplace I haven't been (Hong Kong? Buenos Aires?) but I assumed from the question that I should choose a sure thing.

Now, if I could also choose the date, then choosing Venice or Rio during Carnivale would have to be a serious consideration.

Because that's where you are most likely to find lodging. Most people live in buildings, and most of those buildings are grouped in to areas we call cities.

That is a RECENT milestone. I just heard LAST WEEK that more people live in cities now than don't, for the first time ever.

This article projects the trend. But I heard it last week.

For me it would have to be Paris. The sheer amount of art, architecture, food, entertainment, and culture can hardly be absorbed in a week. There is even Disney, for those so inclined.
The language is probably off putting for many U.S. citizens, but even a superficial knowledge of French will go a long way. Public transport will get you everywhere.

I still think most people would be amazed with MUNCIE.

Well, just got back from two post offices. Submitted my first passport application. Wish me luck.

I had no idea they take your birth certificate, and then send it back to you.

First, use a card like Capital One. This is a little thing we can all do. Capital One credit cards have the best conversion rate and don’t charge you an foreign transaction fee. It’s a great card to travel with as you know you’ll get the best rate without any fees. I recommend everyone getting one. It is the BEST card to travel with. Use no other!

If I had to go: not a city, but Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands for some serious wreck diving

If I could send my wife: Machu Picchu (she has long dreamed of going there)
If I could send my son: Kagoshima, Japan (the master of my son's Karate discipline teaches there)

Perth, Australia is a really interesting place. You could spend two days on the water, two days in the city, two days in the Outback, and another day just drinking.

I supposedly have some distant cousins in Perth. I made it to Sydney many years ago, but haven't gotten to Perth. Need to put it on the list.

The next city I want to go to is Varanasi.

I've been to India a few times, but never made it to Varanasi.

Although Kathmandu beckons too.

I'm kind of surprised so many of you guys want to come to Australia.
