Washing "dry clean only" jacket. What's the worst that could happen?

I took some stuff to a thrift store and they had this cool-looking khaki windbreaker type jacket for $2. How can you go wrong? On the way home, it hit me that it was probably "dry clean only". Sure enough, it was.

It has a mild cologne smell, so I'll either wash it or give it back to the store. It is all cotton except for a couple of pieces of white leather trim. I think I'll soak it in water and baking soda and hang it to dry.

Are there any tips to washing it? I don't want to spend dry cleaning money on it, because it is almost too small, but wearable.

Why don't you get it dry cleaned?

Is it because of the expense?

There are lots of choices for dry cleaning at home, just Google.

This is one...

Yes.

I have plenty of jackets. If it fit better, I might dry clean it.

It is getting harder to find a place to get something dry cleaned. Most of the places around where I live have gone out of business over the last decade. Some still do cleaning, just not dry cleaning.

I think I might soak it in baking soda water up to the leather at the neck. From what I read, the Woolite home dry cleaning stuff has its own smell, which I don't want.

For goodness sake, you'll have to clean it eventually. I think for a $2 investment, I'd wash it in cold water and Woolite and let the devil take the hindmost.

IF it's almost TOO SMALL NOW, it will definitely be too small after you wash it or soak it! Well, unless you are wearing it at the time and allow it to fully dry while you still keep it on . . . slap smiley

The earth could open up, and angry bearded monkeys who smell really bad could drag you and your loved ones to eternal hellfire just as you put one arm in the washed jacket.

The lining shrinks and the outer shell doesn't, or the outer shell shrinks and the lining doesn't. Been there, done that, ruined the jacket. eye rolling smiley

I washed dry clean only shirt once. It looked like it had been in a bar fight or trampled by a thousand elephants and never recovered.

It was an expensive white shirt and my last one with cuff link cuffs.
It really did hurt to drop it in the circular file. Couldn't wear it though.
