VZ Access modem

My bud just bought a refurb MBP and a VZW USB modem.
The USB modem has the software embedded in it, in theory.
When he tries to install, it goes pretty quick then stops with "1 minute left", and goes no further.
Tried it a couple times, before and after repair perms, same thing.
Resulting in a force quit.
The MBP sees it as a device in Finder (otherwise the embedded software wouldn't even show up).
Has anyone played this game with a VZW USB modem recently and had this problem?
I told him to go back to VZW store and have them install from a CD.

I have one of those for work - there is client software that needs to be installed. He might be able to download it from Verizon's web site; otherwise, he should go in.

It is what it is.

Yeah, there's some kind of activation Verizon has to do.

K, funny the VZW store doesn't have a install CD in stock. Scary.
I'm meeting him tmrw anyway to transition from the dead pbook to the new MBP.
I'll dl and install then.
The VZW modem is his only source of interwebs since there is no "modem" on the new MBPs.

Go to vzam.net and download the VZAccessmanager version required for the specific device. Its free and will work in OSX 4 and up. The software on his device is probably too old for his Mac's OS.

When he plugs it in to the MBP is he on battery power or A/C adapter? If the former, is he using a usb adapter cable that plugs into two usb ports? If not, plug the laptop into A/C power. In a few seconds, OS X should give you a popup that a new network device is available and do you want to open network preferences. Do so. Click on the VW adapter in the network settings. You can call VW and have them activate the device and provide the needed info to enter into the network settings. I did this with both my Macs. I only used the Verizon Access manager occasionally, as it is needed to update the devices network info.

if you're having trouble getting it going, call verizon. they were helpful for me when I had to set one of those up for my boss.

10.6 Network Prefs doesn't recognize the neked modem he got, a 760.
10.5 did (my MBP).
Turned out that there was a dialog window that popped up behind the install window that he didn't see when I was trying to phone him thru.
Got it done today, fast as I thought it should be.
Thanks,
