Anyone running an iPad on 3G only?

Was thinking about getting my dad a 3G iPad since he doesn't have a computer or access to the net/WiFi. I'm curious to hear first hand feedback on using iPad's over 3G for everyday net activities. Anyone?

Going to be faster than a modem but slower than the slowest broadband

I do not have an iPad but i believe that Apple has not yet shipped the 3G capable model. If that is true, you might only be able to get comments from users with the WiFi capable model.

There are LOTS of those out there just having a fine time....:-)

The 3g models are in the wild and work great.

The 3g models started shipping 23 days ago..

My mom got hers 22 days ago.

The 3g is faster than Hughes.net, but not as fast as the broadband at work.

Haven't used it very much... being not mine and all..

Has convinced me that when I DO get one, it'll be a 3G model.

On the road the past few days and accessing 3G only. The speed has been pretty inconsistent and loading hangs more often than via WiFi at home. Been getting full bars too. Find it helps to turn on/off cellular data if a site or page takes too long to load. The battery drains faster than on WiFi, maybe at least 30% quicker, so a bit more than I expected.

My siblings and I are also giving our dad, who just turned 89 yrs old, an iPad 3G and he's never used a computer but wants an iPad. Thought of getting him a cheapo Mac and setting up a router/WiFi, but I live far away and no one in my family who is close by can really troubleshoot. So 3G is probably the best bet for him, and although he won't noticed a difference, I personally am very glad to have a WiFi option at my house.

The definitive answer is:

It depends.

Depends greatly on the network capacity where he's accessing from. Depends on what he's used to (if he doesn't have a computer I suspect the speed will be fine).
