I saw that picture. If I read the article correctly, I'm sorry you two lost a baby because of this form of morning sickness. I'd never heard of it before. On the other hand, sometimes the best advocates for stimulating research into specific illnesses are people who've suffered though them--it looks like your wife was a perfect person to embrace that cause because of her specialty.

She's still active in the hyperemesis community, working with the Help HER foundation. She's been to to DC to speak to a congressional committee to try and get some funds set aside for research. Just today she was also on the Bill Carroll radio show on KFI in Los Angeles. I guess Bill Carroll's wife suffered from it.

I'm not the only mrfer married to a hyperemesis survivor, by the way.

I wasn't making jokes. I couldn't tell if this thread was serious, or some attempt at a joke about a very serious situation. I lost a female relative to morning sickness, it's not anything to laugh about.
I'm sorry to hear about Mike's wife and I certainly hope she is better soon, and that the pregnancy goes OK.
Just a thought, if you're going to introduce something this serious, and personal, some footnotes would be helpful.

sorry if I sounded callous. I just saw the pick and the caption. Never read the article, so I had no idea you had lost a child. My GF has had 2 misscarriages when she was married, and her sister-in-law has had 6, but she just had a healthy baby boy on the 19th. 7th time's a charm!

When my lovely wife was pregnant with our now 12 year old son, she threw up every morning for the entire pregnancy. She only gained perhaps 5 lbs total, and that was by dint of forcing herself to eat 'for the baby'. The four earlier pregnancies (2 miscarriages, 2 children) had some minor morning sickness.

We never knew it was a named condition.

After two months of that she decided we were going to have permanent birth control so there would not be any more 'surprises'.

Have these poor women tried Maxalon?

I suppose they have and it didn't work for them.

This article is inflammatory and not well written...I have never known an OB or ED physician to call patients with hyperemesis 'pukers' or stated that it was psychological. Hyperemesis is not a rare diagnosis...only the very severe cases like these are rare. I think there's a dearth of drug research because doing therapy on pregnant women is fraught with liability and disasters...recall thalidomide.

A co-worker's wife was squeezing his hand during childbirth. 3rd kid. She asked him to have a vasectomy. She wouldn't let go until he gave in. She broke a few bones in his hand before he gave in.

Yes, it's poorly written. It conflates morning sickness and hyperemesis, which is no help. It calls it a "rare condition" and then quotes an expert as saying it's "not that uncommon."

My wife is an OB and she's never heard HG patients called "pukers," but she has heard plenty of doctors say it's all psychological. Shoot, she was fired by her medical group for having HG. It wasn't a big surprise. While she was sick, her boss -- the chairman of the OB department -- said to her, "I wish I had hyperemesis so I could lie in bed and read books all day."

Zofran, reglan, and the like can be very effective. Unfortunately, they're not always covered by insurance plans. For example, because Zofran is typically used right before and after a chemotherapy session, many insurance companies won't approve its continuous use. And there are insurance companies that have refused to cover treatments for hyperemesis after the first trimester because that's when the nausea is supposed to end.
