Let's beat this dead horse to death!

Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December.

doesn't Apple feel this will cannibalize their US sales to AT&T customers?

plus will it help them world-wide, in the big picture? hardly seems so.

Why would Apple care? To Apple, an iPhone customer is still their customer whether they buy an AT&T or Verizon iPhone. Only AT&T would care. Apple would probably get more customers from those refusing to switch to AT&T.

a switch from AT&T to Verizon is zero gain for Apple.

only those who switch from T-Mobile/Sprint or stay with Verizon would add to Apple's coffers.

and from the numbers i've seen reported, Verizon customers would not add a huge amount in relation to worldwide sales.

decay, are you discounting those with Verizon that are happy with Verizon and hate ATT so will stay BUT will now buy an iPhone? I think that's what others were trying to point out.

I think this is more of an 'and' rather than 'or.' I knew this was coming next year. No reason AT&T offers to cut a year off my contract in order to lock me in for two more.

Count me as a potential iPhone customer if they release a CDMA phone for Verizon. It's not that I hate AT&T or love Verizon, it's just that the AT&T signal in the areas I need the phone are crap.

Even though CDMA is a U.S.-thing, the U.S. is still a significant market.

And yeah, they'd be adding the carrier, not replacing AT&T.

Adding carriers is the most important thing Apple must do in order to grow iPhone market share and stem the Android tide. iPhones are gonna have to wind up in mall kiosks and everywhere Android is in order to stay a major player.

Incorrect assumption that Qualcomm CDMA chips to Apple = VZW iPhone. First, look at the ATT/ Apple legal documents about exclusive US placement. Second, look at the huge untapped CDMA markets in China and India which are not in those documents. Without some hefty concession to ATT's lawyers, I strongly doubt there will be any VZW iPhone in the US until the ATT contract ends (end of 2011?).

Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease...

Extended family's on Verizon, and (by coincidence) my 2 years is up in January, so I'll be ready for a new plan/phone. My cracked-screen Razr is starting to show its age.

Not sure I want to pay zillions every month for a data plan, tho.

They waited too long. Android is swarming into domination. If Apple is going to do it, then they need to do it right now.

I think Apple needs to be on Verizon simply to blunt Android's dominance of the Verizon smartphone platform.

Apple took its lumps with AT&T's crummy plan and will never have to do the same on Verizon. Even if Verizon's network is overwhelmed, they can always blame the Android phones.

My crusty Palm Centro and I are part of the wasn't-worth-changing-carriers-to-AT&T-for-an-iPhone market. My wife has more smartphone envy than I do, but we'll only wait so long. Why should Apple cede me to Android?

I thought the Verizon network was not capable of having a phone conversation and surf the web at the same time. Maybe it was a handset thing.

There are almost 100 countries around the world that have operating CDMA networks. It is not just a USA technology.

LTE is a CDMA technology. That's what all the GSM (including AT&T) networks are migrating to.

CDMA (Verizon, Sprint and others) cannot do simultaneous voice and data...
