I don't disagree, Gutenberg; this man enjoyed doing what he was best at, and what he did hurt other people. Still, 43 is awfully young.

Heck, you'd depopulate the entire planet.

The man was vicious. What he did to Shirley Sherrod was unconscionable. He cared about nothing and no one but himself.

It makes me angry that some obits are referring to him as a "journalist." WRONG. JOURNALISTS CHECK FACTS.

C'mon ABC. "Andrew Breitbart, the noted conservative Internet publisher and author". Not the first words that sprang to my mind!

I agree with you on this in general, but there are a few people where I'm not sure I would feel the same; e.g., if Fred Phelps, the leader of Westboro Baptist Church - the group that protests at military funerals - were to die, I don't think I could be so generous. Many of his "congregants" who do the protesting are members of his family. In the case of Breibart, though, I imagine if I knew his family I would agree with the sympathies you express here.

That saddens me, Ted. The very moment we successfully dehumanize another person - no matter how hateful or deserving of scorn - we take part in the very worst practice of which people are capable. This damaging practice is at the center of war, prejudice, injustice, and incredible suffering. No good ever comes of this activity. Ever. When Fred Phelps dies, i will feel sad for his family whether or not i feel sorrow at his loss.

Sorry folks, but in this case I gotta go with Moms Mabley:

"They say you shouldn't say nothin' about the dead unless it's good.
He's dead.
Good!"

You know, Shirley Sherrod has a family, too. At least he's dead and can't hear what we are saying about him. He isn't going to lose his job or reputation or anything, is he? I hate to tell you, but a LOT more people read Breitbart than read this forum; it's just stupid to act like anything said here is going to reach his family members. Unlike Breitbart who knew his acts were going to inflict damage, we are free to kvetch all we like here.

Precisely. Death is death. Life is very, very short. It's unfortunate he chose to do what he did with his brief time on this planet. So let it be with Caesar.

I'm not sure how someone of Breitbart's ilk would or could have atoned for his 'sins,' but a good start would have been coming clean about how disingenuous and manipulative he was regarding the agenda he pushed.

He willfully inflicted damage on the national discourse, along with his protege, O'Keefe. Now it's too late to right any of those wrongs.

His family routinely joins him in increasing the emotional hardship of the family of fallen warriors by protesting at their funerals, so I just couldn't gin up any sympathy for them at his death. I don't see that as an injustice. It may contribute in some small way toward the bad things you point out, but sometimes I think @#$%& for tat is justifiable in spite of that. I have a lot of respect for many of the teachings of Jesus, but I'm not a Christian and I certainly don't pretend to aspire to the kind of moral perfection he talked about.

I don't know anything about breitbart, but I don't think it is just what our attitudes do to him or his family, it's also what they do to us. Being glad that someone horrible dies ignores the potential for good that they had, and the loss of that potential. It's all just sad. kj.

Precisely my point.

We always hear about how tragic it is when people don't, won't or can't achieve their goals in life or realize their absolute potential.

Then we have people like Andrew Breitbart who, in a manner of speaking, choose to use their considerable powers to promote enmity rather than understanding.

To my mind, that is the real tragedy.

This kind of though is so strange to me. We know nothing of him personally. For all I know, he's a only child whose parents died long ago. He was a hateful man. I do not regret that he's no longer here. I don't even know if he has family and I don't care - i will never meet them. If they exist, I suppose they will feel bad about it - why should I care in the slightest? I don't. The legion of evil has been reduced by one - it is a day to rejoice!

There's a difference between being "glad" someone died and being "not sorry" that someone died. And spare me the lectures about the toll on one's own humanity. I doubt very much that making a few snarky remarks about a dead person is going to turn me into a monster.

mick e has ADD. It pretty much sucks, but when you find a functional niche it's not so bad.

Typically it means that you find a way to make a living that doesn't require an employer or fixed schedule that can become mundane.

A person with ADD can also become quite angry if they don't take steps to live a healthy life (get plenty of sleep, sunshine, excercise and eat a healthy diet that is lower-carb). It would appear that this may have been Breitbart's downfall.
