My guess is that Maher doesn't want a precedent set that media celebrities aren't allowed to call people names.

What I think people aren't acknowledging is the strong resentment that much of the country has for Limbaugh and his ability to make GOP politicians cower and kiss his butt, as well as his infuriating habit of playing the "I'm Only An Entertainer" card whenever he has stepped over the line. I kind of doubt that this is even going to hurt Limbaugh in the long run, although I sure wish it would, but for now it's been a great rallying point for all of us who are fed up with the man's constant abuse of his bully pulpit. If it teaches him some humility, then that will have been a good thing.

As for Maher, he's being used by the right as the poster boy for Liberals Who Got Away Saying Mean Things, so I imagine he feels forced to stick up for Limbaugh.

Not a big Maher fan. Maher's M.O. is to be frank, but his lack of subtlety plays into the righteously-indignant hands of his targets.

Maher was subject to a call for an HBO boycott over something he did or said about the football player Tim Tibow. Whoopie and Barbara WaWa echoed the same sentiment as Maher.

It's self interest over public interest that takes precedent for them.
