Friends and fellow soldiers and neighbors of soldier accused of murder are shocked to learn his identity

[seattletimes.nwsource.com]

His family has left their home and gone into hiding. He's the father of 3 and 4 year old children.

One thing with John Henry Browne involved, if the military is trying to hide info about this, they won't be able to. The guy is very good.

His most recent famous client is the Barefoot Bandit, Colton Harris-Moore, and he took very good care of Colton, which I was really glad to see.
He was also on the defense team for Ted Bundy.

This isn't about excusing, it's about understanding and maybe preventing, but I thought this comment from the article was interesting:
On Saturday, the day before the shooting spree, Browne said, the soldier saw his friend's leg blown off. Browne said his client's family provided him with that information, which has not been verified.

Browne said he did not know if his client had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but said it could be an issue at trial if experts believe it's relevant. Experts on PTSD said witnessing the injury of a fellow soldier and the soldier's own previous injuries put him at risk.

"We've known ever since the Vietnam War that the unfortunate phenomenon of abusive violence often closely follows the injury or death of a buddy in combat," said Dr. Roger Pitman, a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist who heads the PTSD Research Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital. "The injury or death of a buddy creates a kind of a blind rage."

With repeated and frequent deployments we are putting inhuman pressure on our soldiers and marines. If we are going to continue waging war all over the world we need to reinstate the draft and eliminate most deferments. For one thing that will make the government think twice before sending Americans off to war--the politics will be too difficult to go to war on impulse, as we did in Iraq. And if we do go to war the sacrifice will be spread more equally.

I am talking a men's and women's draft.

Very well stated Grace.

Bbbbut Gutty. Wouldn't draftees have to be provided with health coverage which would include women's health care? The Church of the Far Right would never allow that.

They have what they want now, a compliant mobile military that can be dispatched anywhere, anytime at will. I agree with the sentiment and have endorsed it in the past but it'd be like getting toothpaste back in the tube - won't happen.

I think this might be more to the point.

This made me feel like crying. Not that I have any personal connection to these people, but because we are collectively responsible for the fact that this guy was in Afghanistan. How does a man go from loyal husband and loving father to mass murderer? What an odyssey of the mind.

If this one guy can stand in for a broad scientific survey, it starts with isolation from your family, being passed up for promotions because you're too good at your job for them to let you go, being inexplicably passed up for medals that any other person in the same position would have had handed to them, getting shot in the foot, getting shot in the head, going slowly bankrupt, being thrown into traumatic combat repeatedly and seeing your buddies blown to bits all around you.

Alcohol may have played a role, too.

Then again, maybe he's just nuts.

The military has had a long history of failing to adequately deal with physical and psychological injuries to the brain. It is an easy assessment when a limb or other body part is missing, but there has been many problems over the years assessing other injuries. Too many with mental issues caused by either type of injury have been sent back into service or discharged as unfit for other reasons. Some improvement has occurred in recent years, but the military has a long way to go yet.

As for how a loving father and husband can go down this path., I am reminded of the veteran father of a couple friends of one of my brothers. Their father was an aircraft tech in the Air Force. Someone dropped a large wrench on his head during maintenance on a plane. Knocked him out cold for an hour, given some aspirin and cleared to go back to work. But from that point forward he had discipline problems and was eventually put out on a less than honorable discharge. The Air Force never acknowledged that it might have been due to the injury. He had multiple violent episodes, not helped by self medicating with alcohol, that kept him on the local police radar. His wife stuck by him as much as she could, she knew how he had been. He finally died after a decade or so, she insisted on an autopsy. Clear evidence was found of the original brain injury, The VA and Air Force doctors never acknowledged that before. They were petitioning to have his discharge retroactively upgraded, I don't know if they ever succeeded. But she felt vindicated, as she knew when he changed.

The bigger issue is that medical science in general has a limited understanding of the brain and how it works, or how it doesn't work, and we're just barely emerging from the dark ages in terms of how well we're able to diagnose organic or psychological problems.
In terms of trying to identify when a soldier with no underlying organic brain abnormality is about to snap, I would not be surprised if the technology exists, or will exist soon, to make an accurate prediction with scans, probes, and electrodes in a reasonably quick screening.
Until then, it will be very easy to dismiss a finding of PTSD as being of questionable merit, or veracity.

Thinking also about those NFL players with brain injuries who experience psychiatric and other problems later in life, sometimes suicide. Definitely something that needs to be better understood, acknowledged, and of course if possible, prevented.

When I was working on a summer job in college, I had a boss I really liked. Great guy. He was the uncle of a girl I new. Right after the summer was over, it was found out he had a brain tumor. Then, before any treatment, he raped his grandmother and went to jail for life. No one ever talked about the brain tumor. The crime apparently was so bad, everyone thought he should be locked up for life. Maybe so. I never did think so.

Yes heard some vague murmurings about that a few days ago, so how did he get accepted by the army with a fraud charge like that?
What happened to those famous background checks?
