Historically poor election result for conservative French President Sarkozy

Since the start of the Fifth Republic in 1958, no incumbent has failed to capture first place in the first round of French presidential voting.
Until yesterday.

Conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy finished behind socialist Francois Holland. Sarkozy has been a proponent of austerity measures both in the eurozone and in France.

Holland favors higher taxes on the wealthy and on corporations, wants to hire more teachers and increase the minimum wage.

If elected Holland would be the first left-winger to lead France since the mid 90's.

The two will face off on May 6.

What is scarier is Marine Le Pen, the far right wing candidate, getting nearly 20%.

I know its hard to imagine but The National Front is well to the right of the Teabaggers.
