Wonderful. Let's let a few people die to save every American $.08 a year.

This alone is a good reason to stop eating meat. Why would one trust that what they are eating is safe anymore?

My neighbor was a USDA Inspector at Tyson's and wouldn't eat chicken. He considered writing a book on the things he had seen.

Absolutely. People have died due to tainted vegetables.

I'm astonished that people still think that the era of 'every piece of food is inspected by hand' still exists. That hasn't happened for years.

Your best defense against food borne illness is one of these. I use it all the time.

I am astonished that people still eat meat or consume animal dairy, ever. When I was younger, you NEVER heard about people being lactose intolerant or massive meat recalls due to disease. There are things given to cows/chicken/pigs that are classified as "unsafe for human consumption" (RBGH, for one), yet we consume these beings; does not take much to deduce that people are getting worse off by consuming meat.

If you are eating "healthy" meat, then good for you (I personally won't) but unless you NEVER go to a restaurant, you are probably eating "unhealthy" meat as well.

Unfortunately this applies to our entire food supply. Grains, fruits, and vegetables are just as scary.

I respectfully disagree. Although it is possible, as noted above, to be sickened by tainted vegetables, the risk is much higher with animal products. Most people who are seriously sickened each year by food-borne illness have consumed tainted meat, dairy products, or eggs.

John made the comment that things are given to cows/chickens/pigs that are unclassified for human consumption. That most definitely applies to your grains/fruits/veggies. We're not talking e-coli here.

I'm a little confused. John, i think, was referring to additives (like rBGH, as he mentioned) that are not approved for human consumption. Nobody makes grains/fruits/veggies with rBGH, etc. Not yet anyway, though i wouldn't put it past Monsanto to engineer growth hormone-infused feed corn. Maybe you're making an indirect argument against genetically modified organisms (GMOs)?

It's not just GMO. It's all of the pesticides, fertilizers, ripening agents, and polishes.

I choose organic produce when I can, but sometimes it isn't an option. Besides all of the drugs that are given to animals to get fatter, produce more milk or lay more eggs, the drugs are being transfered to humans. The fact that we are getting fatter, having higher occurences of cancer, higher blood pressure, higher levels of diabetes and other maladies can be directly connected to our diets.

I do not eat meat (primarily) for ethical reasons; even without that, the drugs that they put in the animals would be a close second reason why I would stay vegetarian.

Yes, it concerns me how many chemicals are put into my food as well (vegan diet, primarily - no dairy at all). The food companies are doing pretty much what they want to mazimize profits, without much of a care of the long term effects.
