I believe the government, at all levels, should get out of the arena of sanctifying "marriage". IMO, marriage should be defined by the various churches. If one church wants to restrict it to man-woman, fine; other churches can make their own rules.
I think the government should be in the business of granting civil unions with the appropriate legal protections and should not discriminate between gay and hetero couples.

The term "marriage" is used in so many contexts that I think that ship has sailed. The only thing churches can do is come up with another name. My parents were married in a civil ceremony and there's no way you could have gotten them, or others to say something other than they were married. Churches can and do make their own rules as to who can marry under their roofs. That'll never change.

Marriage is well established as a legal arrangement that is already deeply embedded into our laws by providing certain rights that should be available to all. Marriage was around long before the churches started sanctifying it. The churches came late into the marriage game and now try to claim it as their own institution, reserved for only those they approve of.

E-How
Marriage
According to "Handbook to Life in Ancient Mesopotamia" by Stephen Bertman, the Sumerians' idea of love related more to business and property than to emotional connections. Marriage was a business arrangement between a prospective groom, or the groom's father, and the groom's future father-in-law. To arrange a marriage, the families of the bride and groom negotiated and signed a marriage contract that united the families. An important religious tradition in Sumer was the sacred marriage, which took place at the New Year's festival. The sacred marriage celebrated the union between the goddess Inanna and her lover, the god Dumuzi. It is believed that during the ritual, the Sumerian king, who represented Dumuzi, mated with a priestess, who symbolized the incarnation of the goddess Inanna. The sacred marriage ritual was meant to ensure the fertility of the land.

could you provide some sources for churches coming late to the marriage game? i thought in just about every civilization marriage was connected to a spiritual/religious union that was recognized by society's governing body. you seem to say there was a time when it was not and i'd like to investigate that.

I thought it was fairly well known that marriage predated christianity and that it did not become a holy matter for quite some time (other than the fact that in Europe, the christian church controlled all aspects of politics and people's lives). Here's a few...
