Given that the winner is this extreme in a non-extreme state?

Indiana has taken a hard right. There is a chance that Joe Donnelly could pull in enough moderates and independents to win, but it's very slim.

By default, Indiana is a Republican state. The Tea Party endorsed candidate is known statewide while the Democratic nominee is known in but one congressional district.

If Lugar had prevailed, the Dem would not have had a chance now he may have. If Dems do lose they end up swapping a moderate for another hard liner but given the lock-step parliamentary style GOP voting over the past two years, that may not mean all that much.

Indiana is an open primary (you declare on election day at the poll and pull that ballot) Because there were few contested Democratic elections, there is speculation that many D's & I's pulled a R ballot and voted for Moudock thinking he would be easier to beat in a general election.

The PAC money flowed (even as Mourdock denounced it - ha ha) and it will get even worse. Even though Indiana "leans right" they have also been very moderate. Lugar & Bayh were the standards - both fairly bland but effective members able to work with both sides in the spirit of the Senate.

Mourdock ran on his refusal to compromise, which may come back to haunt him in the general election. Also as the larger population finds out more about him he may have more of a fight.

Here's a story that broke just before the election but hasn't made it to the state media yet. Might be an opening salvo on just how corrupt this guy is.

The real issue is getting the non-extremist's out to vote. What has made the tea party and far right is they turn out to vote as a block. Doing so gives a small number great power vs a larger group that isn't active.

This is what happens in Florida every election. The Dems have a substancial lead in registered voters but the Rep get a much higher turnout, and many of those are tea party republicans

Obama congratulated Lugar on his "retirement". LOL

And what does the situation in West Virginia tell you? A convicted felon pulls 40% against Obama in the Dem primary? ROTFL

So how do you feel about Lugar's carer record on foreign policy and it's overall effectiveness in the deterrent of nuclear proliferation ?

Do you think a "no compromise" candidate like Mourdock can achieve the same and continue to secure this countries security as Lugar has ?

If so how does he go about it ?

I don't know that much about Lugar, but the overwhelming decision by hard line conservatives tells me he's a career RHINO whose time had come to be put out to pasture.

Everything that happened yesterday was a win for conservatiaves and a warning signal to Democrats.

I'm curious why you feel compelled to comment on his loss when you admit that you don't know much about him ? What are you basing your comments on if not personal research ?

So why can't I have a personal opinion? I have nothing against him except that he is a career polititian. Thirty + years is too long to serve.

At least swampy was able to admit her ignorance here. It's a start.

Gee, I never heard a peep out of you about Strom Thurmond or Ted Stevens.

By the way, do you know what the red line under a word means before you click "Post message?"

The red line? You are probably referring to spell checking. Sometimes on my iPad I don't don't see it because the type is so small and the glare on the screen so bad. BFD
