Obama vocally in favor of gay marriage

About time.

Those opposed (mostly) weren't going to vote for him. I'd wager that the majority African Americans, being somewhat more opposed to gay marriage (in polls, anyway), are more likely to still vote for him over Romney.

More vision, less triangulation.

Well, this is a positive evolution in his position. It strikes me as a strategic revelation, the day after a
'rallying cry' materialized in a key swing state, but positive nonetheless.

This nothing more than an equation to garner votes sad to say . . . duh get a grip

True, though sometimes the 'threat' of an election is enough to move things forward.

Pandering is where you go against your conscience in order to win favor (i.e. votes). This is the opposite...he's making a stand based on his conscience and I think that he will likely lose votes because of it.

pander
verb ( pander to)
gratify or indulge (an immoral or distasteful desire, need, or habit or a person with such a desire, etc.) : newspapers are pandering to people's baser instincts.
noun dated
a pimp.
• archaic a person who assists the baser urges or evil designs of others : the lowest panders of a venal press.

On this issue Obama is pimping the politically korrect stance.

using your own dictionary this is not pandering since supporting marriage equality is not an immoral or distasteful desire. at least not to many of us. Obama was cornered into being open and clear on this issue by biden and the events in NC. one might call the move opportunistic but pandering implies one doesn't really believe in what you're saying and i don't believe that is true here.

This position will not gain him any votes. Where did you get that crazy idea? Any liberal gay person is going to vote for Obama over Mitt 100% of the time. But this new stance can only scare away some in the middle.

Pandering was his stance in 2008 when the nation was very clearly against gay marriage. Now that the polls are getting closer and the main issues will be the economy, it's safer to come out of the closet, but this is in no way 'pandering' for votes.

I don't care what the motivation was, frankly. To have the President of the United States endorse marriage equality is history in the making and long overdue. No matter how we got here, we did get here, hooray!

More than 30 states have voted and opposed the idea of gay marriage. How can you say you are "getting" there? Is it because the Liar in Chief says it is so? The gays have been so strident on the issue that they turn off people like me who might agree with civil unions that afford them all the protections of "marriage".

Just change a few minor words and we have...

"More than 30 states have voted and opposed the idea of mixed race marriage. How can you say you are "getting" there? Is it because the Negro in Chief says it is so? The negroes have been so strident on the issue that they turn off people like me who might agree with civil unions that afford them all the protections of "marriage". "

So strident? What does that mean? If they hadn't fought for equal treatment then you'd have been ok with it?

The people who have been "strident" are the bigots who think that some people in this country should be denied the same basic rights that the rest of us enjoy.

This fake-oh BS that "marriage" is some sort of religious ceremony that has to be doled out by a church is something that only stupid people fall for.

swampy is a known and proven liar on these boards, which makes it quite hilarious that she would refer to Obama as the "liar in chief".

Swamp still suffers from daily bouts of poutrage that her "side" did not win. Obama is not trying to win the bigot vote, as they will vote how they will until the day they die.

The younger the voter, the more likely they are to support civil rights…er…I mean, marriage equality.

Swamp, you could have just as easlily said this 50 years ago: "More than 30 states have voted and opposed the idea of mixed-race marriage. How can you say you are "getting" there? The race-mixers have been so strident on the issue that they turn off people like me who might agree with civil unions that afford them all the protections of "marriage".

The definitive resolution lies with SCOTUS.

How long before we go there?

^This.

Also, don't forget this: [thinkprogress.org]

... as for those 30 or so states, it's just a matter of time before these and DOMA are ruled unconstitutional, because they discriminate based on sexual orientation.

I sat with tears streaming down my face in 1992 when Bill Clinton made a speech to the LGBT community, and said "I have a vision for America, and you are part of it." It was the first time I truly felt included in the national fabric, as opposed to a voodoo doll. I was being talked to, rather than being talked about. Followed by his oft-repeated phrase that "We don't have a person to waste."

There have been ups and down since then, but we are a better nation than we were in this regard. This is one more step in that journey.

Stephen is correct. Temporary political considerations aside this is a hugh leap. When a tide changes, only those willful enough to ignore it will still be on the beach.

We certainly have enough of them but once that tide finishes it's roll they'll be left without a place to deposit their ignorance and hate. That may happen in the lifetime of my children, if not at least in the lifetime of my grandchildren.
