Use a full bio-hazard suit. Dig it out and get as much root as you can. Wrap fully in plastic bags. Then douse the area with gasoline, torch it, and after that cools, use a gallon of herbicide on a 3 foot radius.

(Just to safe, yes, this is a joke.)

That's why you wait till the fruit ripens on red sumac. I used to make an acidic lemonade-like drink from red sumac berries I believe came from Euell Gibbons' Stalking the Wild Asparagus. Plus, if I recall, the "poison" sumac berry clusters hang down, not upright in a spike.

I don't think it's Sumac. If it were, when I broke off that stem of flowers to take the photo, my hand would be covered in welts.

btfc, the flowers certainly look about right. The leaves are different though... which is why I think it might be water hemlock rather than poison hemlock. Though this page makes me question my identification too:

it is not sumac, tree of heaven, or hemlock of any type. The leaves and flowers just do not match.

I don't know for sure, but have a look at Elderberry.

Acer, wow, you might have nailed it. The flowers in particular look to be right, but also the leaves being serrated.

If this IS elderberry, then I ought not to chop it down...

Edit: oh, and why is this post still on the political side? Maybe it's because of the elderberry wine I plan on making with my weed, which will act like LSD and magically cause the current political candidates to all start telling the truth for once in their lives?
