Remember the Olympics in Beijing ? All 'foreign' factories were required to shut down for a MONTH to reduce pollution for the Olympics. Chinese factories ? They were shut down for about a week, if that.

"Foreign" factories are strictly controlled in terms of following da rules... and the rules are based on European regs, which almost prohibit cows from farting.

Chinese factories ? Naah. A bribe gets you a bye on any regulation, be it environmental, safety, labor rules, etc...

So of COURSE they will begin blaming we evil foreigners.

cbelt, with your technical expertise, I'd be interested to hear what you think of China's strategy for improving air quality as outlined in the linked article. Is it technologically sound? Thanks.

Oh China's policies are excellent on a long term basis. They continue to improve their overpopulation problem by encouraging a reduction in lifespan through extensive pollution and poisoning of the environment, while enriching those government officials responsible through bribery and corruption. Fortunately they are expanding their practices throughout the world by buying up raw material production operations such as mines and refineries and mills all over... Australia, Africa, the US, etc...

In a hundred years the legacy will be a poisoned hulk of a landscape reminiscent of Chernobyl, a population of exceptionally wealthy Chinese officials living overseas or in specially designed domed cities.

Yes, I am being sarcastic.

I don't think the article is about China fighting air quality problems. It's about China fighting US tweets about air quality problems. "China objected to the publicity rather than the gathering of the environmental data." It's really just about a governmental hissy fit.

Exactly-- their approach to fighting their air quality problems is to try to get people to stop pointing it out. cbelt could have got an easy $10 with a click and a little skimming, but you ruined it for him.

I know someone that just got back from a year in Beijing. He had been looking for some sort of advanced HEPA filter that would neutralize SOx (like circulating baking soda solution over metal screens) for INSIDE his hotel room.
