If Romney wins, I hope you don't have a fire in your town. Or crime.

Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

Believe me, I have seen plenty of police loafing their careers away. And with improved communications, response and fire-deterring equipment in new construction, we don't need as many firefighters as we used to. Yet we scream bloody murder every time someone suggests any kind of cut to those ranks. I would prefer to see some police and firefighting cuts, particularly at the HQ level, and put the money saved into front-line classroom teachers. And I would like to see fewer middle managers filing their nails over at City Hall, and put that money saved into front-line rec supervisors and librarians. We need more Indians.

I think we all agree with that. The problem is determining the fat from the muscle. The political solution often seems to be to chop off whole limbs.

And then there is Newark, NJ. They just need more cops.

Where I live, we need more cops, period. I don't think there's much you can do about the muscle to fat ratio, but we're down by about a third and it's painfully obvious.

We need people "doing their jobs" no matter what job they do.

Far too many of us just do the minimum necessary to keep a paycheck coming in.
