Bush only living ex-president under 50% popularity

[politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com]

It is shocking that he has ANY people that look at him favorably. This proves that some put their party before everything else. If you have fond memories of how Bush was a well thought of president, you were not paying attention.

It would be interesting to see how the 1%ers view him vs. the middle class.

Why is it okay for folks to like Obama personally, but disagree with his policies, but not okay to feel the same about GWB?

History will judge GWB.

History IS judging him now and it is looking worse for his legacy, every year. Do you not see the pattern or are you giving bad news about him a pass again?? He will go down as the most corrupt, most incompetent president in many, many years, in addition to one of the most disliked.

This has to do with approval rating nationally, not from you or the right wing as a whole. There will always be a minority of people who approve of him and what he did, but most of us will never forget the Bush years and what he and his cronies did to this country.

It's probably a bit early to be taking popularity polls on his Presidency...people weren't all that fond of Jimmy Carter circa 1980s, but now hold him in much higher esteem. I think after 30 or so years the judgement of history will be fairly set on most things.

W was someone that many Americans thought it would be nice to have a beer with. Why so many Americans thought it would be fun to help an alcoholic fall off the wagon is a puzzler I still haven't solved.

^^LOL^^

I recall his approval rating being in the low 20s when he left office.
Tooling around the ranch has been good to him.
I'll admit I feel more favorably about him now that he's not making decisions that VTPKL up the country and the rest of the world, much the same way I stopped hating Blago when that last impeachment vote was logged.

I'll say one thing for the guy - he is a proper ex president in NOT getting involved with politics. I was worried that he'd be equally bad ex and prez.

I don't think politics interests him all that much. I truly believe he was pushed into it because Jeb wasn't interested in being a puppet whereas W didn't give a damn one way or the other.

I saw Jeb speaking to Charlie Rose last night. It's remarkable how much smarter he is than brother George. I was thinking: why can't we have a Republican like that running? Sure, I disagree on a lot of his positions, but he seems like a thoughtful, decent guy.

Point taken. But I have to say - the interview I watched didn't leave me with as bad as impression as I expected.

Well, yeah. But that's an extremely low hurdle. Kinda like being the fastest snail, or the best-tasting @#$%&.

I think he sold the ranch. He only bought it as a prop.

Don't fool yourself; Obama, although he has not panned out as some had hoped, has a LONG, LONG way to go to get to W territory. No amount of revisionist history will change the way people think of George W Bush; he was the worst president in our lifetime by many metrics, and it is not even close.

At least when Obama continued the wars (which he is also ending, btw), he actually put them in the budget.

I remember thinking during the long primary and general campaign that W was a thoughtful, decent guy—but then he actually walked into the Oval Office and became a robotic conservative with his father's penchant for taking care of his own and their own.

George W. Bush is the most accomplished man on Earth. He has succeeded at everything he's ever put his energy into. Especially remarkable when you consider the substance abuse and all of the other maladies. Marrying Laura was probably the key to his perseverance. He doesn't care what "anyone" thinks about him. The only perception of him that he mentioned that upset him was when Kanye West accused him of being a racist, which Kanye apologized for.

I don't dislike the man, I dislike his politics (though he took a lot of the steam out of the anti-immigrant bigots). Actually I dislike many of his people. Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rove especially.

To hold this position one would have to hold that the Iraq invasion was justified and necessary. Estimates at the number dead due to the Iraq invasion range from 100k to 1,000,000.
IMO, unless you agree with the Iraq invasion, you're getting awfully close to "I don't dislike Hitler, just his politics" here.

The accomplishment was "becoming" President. Twice. He was unsuccessful at hundreds of political efforts. No one is going to bat 1000 once they're in. So Iraq didn't work out for him. It doesn't taint the achievement of winning the office of President. Something only 42 people had previously accomplished. Being a great President would simply be icing on the cake.

The fact that he endeavored to do it and he accomplished it (by any means necessary it turns out) cannot be diminished as a success. Period.

Making it to the Big Leagues is the accomplishment. Winning the World Series is icing on the cake.

By that logic, Franco won the World Series, as did Churchill, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, JFK and all should be held in equal regard for having done that.

It all depends on what "icing" means to them and how difficult their original accomplishments were to achieve. If my goal was to rob every bank in the city and not get caught and I succeeded, you can't take away my accomplishment no matter how much you disliked it.

from 2007:

Missing costs?

The White House assumes war spending will be down to $50 billion in 2009 with none planned beyond then in hopes the war in Iraq will have wound down.

Bush's recent budgets have been met with skepticism by Democrats, partly because they have left out war costs and expensive changes to the alternative minimum tax, which is hitting an increasing number of middle class taxpayers. The Congressional Budget Office estimates updating the AMT for inflation would cost $93 billion in 2012 alone.

Thanks for backing up what I said, decay. Righties like to brush off criticism of Bush as "blaming" and refuse to have honest debates about the effect that Bush had on just about everything.

They are quick to criticize Obama on spending, yet the spending is less now than under either of the Bushes or Reagan.

They are quick to say whatever nonsense they wish about Obama but saying one word about Bush will label you as treasonous or unpatriotic.

Amongst people who know what they are talking about (presidential scholars), they rate Bush as the worst president in our lifetime and in the bottom five of all time.

Sorry righties, he was awful. He had plenty of chances to shine (right after 9/11 & Katrina were particularly poor periods of leadership) but he didn't.
