Something tells me you find that article interesting, Dennis. Just a hunch, mind you.

I'm on record here as having spent an amazing couple of afternoons listening to one of Nixon's White House Staffers as he was dying of cancer, and didn't give a hoot about who knew whatever he knew. None of this is a surprise to me. He said Nixon didn't care about the law.

He did note, however, that when H. Ross Perot came into the office one day and promised to buy all the staffers "Whatever car they wanted", Erlichmann put the kibosh on the deal rather quickly, mumbling something about 'we can't do that, we'd get caught'.

It's pretty much old news and will be treated that way by those few who still defend Nixon. For those who didn't live through it, it'll remain irrelevant since these tactics have now become the norm.

Odd thing is Nixon proposed and enacted policies far enough left that most of today's Democrats would oppose them.

The cat is cute too.

Nixon was also under a lot of pressure from Howard Hughes (one of my heroes - at least as far as airplanes are concerned). Nixon didn't care about the law, but he wanted order. Hughes didn't care about the law either. He wanted security.

If you are interested in Richard Nixon and what led him to act as he did, you cannot go wrong reading "Nixon Agonistes: The Crisis of the Self-Made Man" by Garry Wills. Don't let the Amazon "Book Description" steer you wrong, this is a fascinating book about not only politics but also history and the sixties and this country and the way human beings can let their emotions and self-image stain their entire lives.

^ thanks for that book recommendation, I will take you up on that.

some of Nixon's acts were very "liberal" like creating the Housing and Community Development Act, signed by Ford but begun by the Nixon Administration

I remember watching the watergate hearings with rapt attention, seeing the entire presidency and political system self-destructing. It was fascinating and horrifying all at the same time. I'd always thought Nixon was bad, but what was revealed during that period showed that he was worse than any of us could have imagined. That there are Nixon apologists still out there is astounding. Some people are a chip off the old block, able to deceive themselves beyond any sense of decency or common sense.
