WTH: John Bryson, U.S. Commerce Secretary, cited in Calif. felony hit-and-run

According to the written statement by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Bryson, 68, was allegedly behind the wheel of a Lexus that rear-ended another vehicle waiting for a train to pass in the city of San Gabriel at around 5:05 p.m. PT. The statement says Bryson spoke with the three males in the other car, then allegedly drove away, hitting their Buick again in the process.

Bryson was then "found alone and unconscious behind the wheel of his vehicle," after allegedly causing another accident in the neighboring city of Rosemead about five minutes later.

Police say that while Bryson has now been formally cited in the hit-and-run, it will be up to the district attorney's office to decide whether formal criminal charges should be filed.

Drugs or alcohol were apparently not involved, but unless this guy had some sort of medical problem, I can't figure out why anyone would behave this way. Really odd story.

Seizures. Poor guy. Undiagnosed problem. Fortunately no injuries.

He may have had a stroke. If I understand correctly, the question of alcohol and/or drugs has not been ruled out as yet.

He's 68 years old--I am betting on some kind of cerebral event. If it were alcohol, they would have noted that because cops always mention the reek of alcohol in the report as probable cause to take the driver from the car for a road test. Drugs? Have to wait for toxicology but I bet he's not a street-drug user.

FWIW, my BIL went into a diabetic coma while driving his Subaru Outback last year. He rolled it at approx 35-40 mph on a rural Maryland road. As a result his driving privileges were suspended until he passed 6 months of doctor's tests.

He's driving now, AND managing his blood sugar better.

Heck... last Friday night I had to pull into a rest area and eat a power bar and then walk around for about half an hour.. my blood sugar was crashing and I was getting dizzy.

It ain't all booze and dope. Our bodies can make us higher than any external substance.

Yeah, I don't think it was street drugs or alcohol, but it was still really weird that he hit the one guy twice and then went on and hit another car. I hope he is OK. It could be any number of medical issues.

"but it was still really weird that he hit the one guy twice and then went on and hit another car."

My friend had a stroke and after hearing his co-workers describe it, this doesn't surprise me. He thought he was operating at 100%, but he was totally out of it. He didn't know he didn't know what he was doing.

Like heart attacks, strokes can be subtle and slow. Impairment can begin a couple of days before someone figures out something is wrong, while the victim is completely unaware, as was the case with an elderly member of my family.

He's a Cabinet Secretary and like other Secretary s entitled to a government paid vehicle and driver. That he doesn't avail himself of that perk might speak to his favor.

It's also not a very safe thing to do. They have drivers and a security team because they are 'high value targets'. Being the potential target of a few hundred thousand screaming fanatics is not a 'perk', IMHO.
