My opinion ?
Treason is treason. He should have received the death penalty. A life sentence was a kindness. Sort of.

The article says he pled guilty on the basis of a plea agreement, which was circumvented by the judge. Considering the facts that he may have been railroaded into a pleading and that he has already served 25 years—and, assumedly, that any spy ties have been severed—it may make sense to release him; that, or at least release evidence of the crime and the compelling reason to continue imprisonment.

If you pass on information to a foreign country without anyone knowing you have espionage. If you publish the same thing on the top fold and say unnamed sources gave them to you you get rave reviews.

Pollard should end up serving the same sentence as Bradley Manning will ultimately have to serve.
