Wait, wait, wait, I saw that storyline on that Dr. Who spinoff Torchwood with Captain Jack. I think it was how some evil power suddenly stopped all death, and then they started incinerating all the people who were dead, for all intents and purposes, but who couldn't actually die, you know like Vampires. Well, not exactly like Vampires, because they don't actually age or get sick, but they don't die, either, well unless you stake them, or burn them. You know the Vampires on that show True Blood are really good looking, especially the tall Nordic guy, Eric. The other Vampire, Bill, is actually married to the actress who plays Sookie, did you know that?

So, what was the question?

Terminally ill patients are dying! Somebody must be killing them!

Did you even bother reading the article? They are not all terminal.

Quote

Professor Pullicino, a consultant neurologist for East Kent Hospitals and Professor of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Kent, was speaking to the Royal Society of Medicine in London.
He said: ‘The lack of evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway makes it an assisted death pathway rather than a care pathway.
‘Very likely many elderly patients who could live substantially longer are being killed by the LCP.
‘Patients are frequently put on the pathway without a proper analysis of their condition.

Give her a break she's a bit elderly and prone to believe anything she reads as long as it agrees with her own firmly held opinions.

It also said this:

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.

He claimed there was often a lack of clear evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway, a method of looking after terminally ill patients that is used in hospitals across the country.

It is designed to come into force when doctors believe it is impossible for a patient to recover and death is imminent.

So, it sounds to me like it is his word against the system in place. I read the article. I got out of it they were terminal. I am going to bed. It may be clearer in the morning.

I also heard that we have agreed to a computer simulated war with Russia. If the computer calculates that you have been killed in a nuclear strike, you report to the vaporization chamber for execution.

This way, we avoid ruining the planet with a nuclear war.

It's been here for a while in the form of the NY Post and will yet be with the Wall Street Journal. It's a shame you Brits don't allow things like the FOX channel since they can do more damage in a week than the Mirror might in a month.

After the hyperbolic overreaction above, I actually READ the article. It's a piece by a doctor who has identified lazy doctors in the healthcare system who may be allowing patients to die before their time. He has made assumptions about their reasoning and added 'evil government' overtones to it, but those assumptions have no additional proof in fact.

What he's really found is a pattern of laziness and medical malpractice in Liverpool. This is not surprising.. I think if you go into any medical facility around the world you will find some idiots whose poor work ethic or decisions cost patients their lives.

But let's face it.... everybody dies. No doctor who treats life or death cases has a 100% cure rate.

Are doctors in the UK system less likely to 'go the extra mile' ? Are they less incentivised to cure than elsewhere ? I don't know. I'd like to think they are just as interested in healing patients as for-profit doctors elsewhere. I cannot speak to the work ethic of UK doctors personally, and my only second hand notes are based on the 1980's, when my cousins felt that they were receiving poor care under the new system. My Aunt feels that the care they receive in France is superior.

In the end I believe that proof of an official motivation in the UK to 'kill patients for bed space' does not exist. As a cautionary tale it has its benefits, but it has no relevance to the current debate in the US about healthcare overall.
