Well, nice for him, but the age difference is a bit far.

What do you call it when a younger man marries an older man?

Damn. We need new terminology here. :-)

I have long suspected that the Urban Dictionary is littered with "definitions" contributed by teenaged boys who make them up out of whole cloth. If a word has a dozen totally different meanings, at what point do we write it off as not communicating anything at all?

We play scrabble using the rule that if at least two people around the board have heard of a word, or can be convinced it exists, then it counts. Same rule is true at the Urban Dictionary, it seems!

People hating people who love each other are bad.

I have a solution for the gay marriage problem: Every time a man and woman get divorced, the gay people get a voucher for one marriage. They can have a lottery to see who gets it, but it shouldn't take long for there to be plenty of vouchers for everyone.

There won't need to be a lottery. There will be enough divorces within a couple months for every gay couple in the world.

Avenger-

At the risk of feeding the denizen who lives under a bridge and threatens Billy Goats Gruff....

Your question was oddly phrased. How would you recommend the marriage rules be extended beyond "Between a human and another human " ?

Perhaps your question implies a desire to allow marriages beween more than two humans ? Or between humans and animals ? Or between humans and things (like those Otaku) ?

A bit more detail is requested by those of us who happily are unable to read your mind.

My point is that there are myriad of restrictions preventing all sorts of people from marrying each other. Why only gays get this waiver?

You mean first cousins, siblings, etc?

Ed- interesting concept. Those restrictions (which vary by state) were created back in the public health era as an attempt to reduce inbreeding related birth defects. Without major medical intervention, same gender siblings and cousins would not be subject to those restrictions.

Small society inbreeding definitely produces significant birth defects. The local Amish communities have those problems in spades... one of the best local genetic birth defect centers is based on Amish country southeast of where I live.

With the advent of modern in utero and in vitro testing for genetic abnormalities, is this an issue ?

Of course, in a society where abortion is becoming criminalized, perhaps it is.

Ok, you may have developed an interesting question. One wonders how the Law will evolve to deal with it. Of course considering that the Law does not evolve, it primarily mutates and becomes a cancerous lesion on society when subject to the ionizing effect of politics, I'm sure it will continue to be an ugly issue.

The existing marriage contract works perfectly for a gay couple. No "waiver" required.

Two consenting, unrelated adults of legal "marrying" age, neither of whom is currently married to anyone else. Works for straight couples, works for gay couples.

Does not work for polygamists, siblings, minors, dogs, rocks, etc.

Well, make it work. After all, you can make marriage mean anything you want. As for genetic issues, that is a red herring. It is not a given by a long shot. First cousins marriage is actually the norm all over the world and I don't see too may people with one hand and no legs.

Talk about red herring.

These are generally not productive or interesting conversations so I'll bow out.

Sodomy- Any of various forms of sexual intercourse held to be unnatural or abnormal, especially anal intercourse or bestiality.

"if they share a dog
or a chunk of plastic

unless you mean biblical sodomy and even then they would certainly qualify"

So if lesbians have either a dog or a printer, they are sodomites. Well, that clears things up! ;)

Oral sex serves no biological purpose. Is that sodomy as defined?

Sodomy was a city was it not, in which unnatural acts of degradation took place. Those acts happen in every town and city in America.
They happened long before any homosexuals asked for the same rights under the law as anyone else.
Gay people didn't create perversion!

All the words in the world will not change a gay person into a straight person. So if they are exactly and only who they are, why do you feel you have the right to hold moral judgement over them, by denying them the same rights you have?
Please answer this simple question without recourse to the words and thoughts of someone else. Why do you get to decide what these people can have?

Actually Avenger does bring up an interesting point. If multiple consenting adults want to get married, why can't they? Why limit marriage to two people? Why can't a man have multiple wives or a woman multiple husbands?

Because the assumption behind that kind of thinking is that gay marriage is somehow "different" than straight marriage. Spurious reasoning makes for dumb ideas.

In some societies they do.

Within the last generation, Jews in the Yemen still practiced polygyny. Most of the Yemenite Jews moved to Israel, where any extra wives became "aunties" since plural marriage is not recognized in Israel.

Within the last generation TIbetan Buddhists still practiced polyandry and polygyny. Not sure whether the Chinese have had any effect on the ones in Tibet. The ones in Nepal/India do it less because of changes in their economic structure and Western influences.
