Mitt seems to be taking "got nothing" to amazing new heights.

It probably is the best he can do. Team Romney can't do anything but play defense from now on, a mess of their own making.

Most interesting line in the story...

" The candidate, taking a weekend off from public events, spent the morning at his lake house, working on his iPad on the lawn while his grandchildren played nearby."

So one could say Romney supports a closed and controlling approach...

or

He is status conscious and throws money away...

or

He likes quality

or

he needs things simple

or

the man is smarter than I thought (but I'm still not voting for him).

Spread it on whole wheat propaganda bread and keep the lemmings' bellies full.

Neither one of 'em should be talking about their records on job creation. They both suck.

Whining and complaining about being badgered about releasing his past tax returns is a HUGE mistake.

Yes, of course the Obama team will go over every detail and use every tidbit they find against Romney and yes, much of the data will be taken out of context and used to the full extent of the law. It's not 'Chicago style politics' - it's presidential election politics. Welcome to the big leagues buddy...

BUT... Romney WILL release these records. He must. Obama will not ease the pressure one bit and will only increase it until these tax records become the biggest story of the campaign.

He shoulda done it years ago so that the noise will have died down come election time.

I'd have to disagree bill. Of course there is nothing easier than saying "they both suck" and if you don't want to think any harder than that, then stop reading.

Obama should be talking about job growth since 2009.
From 2000 to 2009 there was net zero job growth in the United States, something that was unprecedented over the past 70 years.

In 2010 alone there were more new jobs created than over the entire Presidency of George W. Bush. Romney's team consists mostly of Bush people, why would anyone want to go back there?

We're clearly not in Kansas anymore. There's quite a lot to discuss.

I disagree Lemon - talking about job growth while the unemployment rate is so high rings hollow. Yes jobs are being created - but the effects of jobs growth requires charts and graphs to be understood - it isn't plainly evident.

Typical ones at that.
I expect little more from you.
Considering the source, they have absolutely no value to me.

Curse away with more foul diatribe.
It's at best amusingly entertaining.

The term "Chicago-style politics" is very popular among the right, so in using it Mitt is sending a signal to folks whose vote he is soliciting. It's not as meaningless as it appears.

Yes, everyone smears. As for job creation, both should talk about what they have done. And why what they wanted to do wasn't carried out and who stopped their plans.

Could be, but I really was reacting more to the comment in context . . . he kind of gets backed into a corner and the "Chicago" thing pops out fairly acontextually....

During most of Bush years, we were routinely hearing of 300,000 jobs a month. Obama would kill for a third of that. So take that Obama-created-new-jobs elsewhere.

This chart is not going to win Obama reelection. Shuttered stores and laid off people will see to that. There are 350,000 new people joining unemployment lines every week. 80,000 new jobs a month is not going to cut it. That is less than 30 jobs per county.

BUT... Romney WILL release these records. He must.

If he releases his state 2010 return, it will be the definitive piece of evidence that proves he committed voter fraud in MA in January 2010. He did not meet the MA residency requirements.

It's been painfully obvious to professionals (including bloggers) that Romney is a serial liar. The pile of evidence is huge. What does take a while is for the press to develop a narrative about the challenger and to pile on. If the Romney narrative is that he says whatever he thinks will win him a vote, no matter how often he has to change his position in order to do so, then that narrative will build and build. It might coalesce around the Bain story, it might build around the fact that he told two opposing stories, one to argue his residency so he could run for governor, the other so that he could pretend not to be a predatory businessman in his presidential run. It might be something else. In the meanwhile, he seems to be trying to be a lightweight Karl Rove, attacking Obama in Obama's strong points, but it doesn't seem to be working this time around. I suspect that this is because George W Bush, although perceived as being a little dumb, was also perceived as having a kind of dumb guy toughness in an era when that was considered a plus. Romney comes across as wimpy and whiney in too many ways. We haven't seen a lot of Obama fighting back against the Republicans during the past 3 years because he has had other obligations as president, such as trying to get legislation passed and judges approved. But now it's election season, and the gloves come off to a certain extent. I suspect that the Romney campaign has been trying to figure out how to do the etch-a-sketch thing so that he can appeal to sane voters, and they are having a difficult time of it. That conflicts with doing the Rove game, because going low all the time has become offensive to the swing voters.

To add to what CaBob said: It became painfully clear to Republican opponents that given half a chance Romney was willing to dump enormous amounts of money into negative campaign ads -at times outspending opponents 8 or 10 to one to, in many cases, barely eck out a victory.

That was all he wanted or needed to push them all out of the running and ascend to the nomination.

The Obama campaign team would be fools to not act to counter his ability to do the same to their candidate. The first part of the plan seems to be working but with his access to cash it's hardly decided, after all it's not even August yet and aside from people who eat, drink and breath politics the real campaign has yet to begin.

Don't bet Bain and tax returns against Rove, Kotch, Merdoch and company, at least not yet.

There are 30+ jobs bills passed by the House Republicans and languishing in Harry Reid's pocket because he doesn't have the votes to defeat them. Dems are the obstructionists, but try to blame it all on the Reps. That's Chicago Politics to me.

To make sure they back up their public claims with what might appear to be "fact", they've built a page on the House of Representatives site with a list of their so-called jobs bills, which number 27 and not 30 as the Speaker claims. What follows is a list and a brief explanation of why they are not jobs bills. Feel free to share it widely with your friends who might be inclined to believe Mr. Tobacco Lobbyist Check Distributor without questioning it.

BTW, swampy's 30+ job statement was clearly nothing more than a GOP release. There was some variation in how many jobs bills were held up by the senate, 10-30+, but finding an objective appraisal or listing of these bills was about impossible. Heck I couldn't even readily find a moderate appraisal. It was nothing more than a partisan release that's been parroted throughout. And yes Democrats do the same thing.

Heck, if the Republicans hadn't wasted those 31 (or was it 33) votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act, they could have passed over 60 jobs bills.
