black, your thread was completely apropos of the most important political news and deserves another chance post-derailment. (sorry about that)
Yeah Mitt really has no good choices here. If his tax returns were not problematic he would have dumped them early in the primary season and nobody would be discussing it now.
As for Bain, he's looking up from a hole he dug himself. His campaign, including these new hires brought in to fix all this, seems to make things worse every time they address this.
For example, when asked if Mr. Romney agreed with management decisions while he was "away" running the Olympics:
"Those decisions were made by folks that were running the company differently. So I don't have the details of what decision-making went into it. Oftentimes what happens with those type of decisions is that you have software companies, you have different types of companies that have to go out and have manufacturing needs, and when they go to look for companies that have manufacturing needs that they don't have, oftentimes those are manufacturing outposts around the globe. But the most important thing that we can answer is what we're going to do to create more jobs here in the country, and that's where Governor Romney has a much superior plan than President Obama."

That is poorly handled excuse making. I'm glad the folks here have brought this issues to the fore, I hadn't paid a lot of attention before now. I categorize myself as a somewhat disinterested voter, and my ears @#$%& up about these issues. To me, integrity is important, and Mitt lacks it. I observed as he poured money into attack ads during the primary, now I hear him whine that, suddenly, turnabout is not fair play. Then, he is explaining away the submission of shaky documentation to the SEC. Sure, you can tell me that everyone is doing it, but don't ask to be my representative, the leader of my country. Beyond that, we get into the ugliness of his finances. Why won't he release the tax returns? I didn't think a lot of it before, but now? What is he hiding that McCain can see, but the electorate cannot?

This is a good synopsis of why this has blown up the way it has. I still credit the Obama campaign with pounding away at it until it became a "thing", but it is proving to be a very serious thing indeed.

The Governor will not be releasing his taxes. Period! He knows he would be cutting his own throat. It has taken him since the first day after the last presidential vote to clean up his finances enough to be able to release his 2010 taxes.

Even a lot of Republicans didn't like Romney refusing to release his tax records. Evidently, based on what happened after the South Carolina primary, Republican voters seem to have largely decided that more than two years tax records weren't necessary in their vetting of Romney. But I have great doubts that the electorate in general, and swing voters in particular, are going to not be noticeably concerned that Romney won't release tax records for farther back.
Anyway, based on what happened in the South Carolina primary debate and direct aftermath, it should have been obvious to everyone - Romney in particular - that the lack of producing a fairly comprehensive set of tax records was going to be a problem. I'm firmly in the camp of people who think the reason he isn't releasing more years of records is because he thinks doing so will hurt him more than not doing so. And not doing so is going to hurt him quite a bit, so what's in those records is probably pretty "bad". Of course, I could be wrong; it's even possible that there is nothing all that "bad" in Romney's tax records and that he planned on releasing many years worth all along, but he is trying to coax Obama way out on a limb of making the tax records a key issue and then showing that they amount to nothing, weakening Obama vis a vis himself. That's possible, but I really doubt; I'll bet he's got something he really wants to hide.

Great points Ted, I agree that I don't think Romney's playing games with his tax returns, that would make him look pretty ridiculous. If the returns reveal more of the same as his 2010, that's more ammunition for Democrats. If they're worse, that's even more ammunition. If he doesn't disclose them, people will assume that he's hiding something serious.
