While my personal taxes have never been audited, my corporate taxes were once. An auditor spent three days going over papers, the end result was no change in taxes, and I was never bothered again.

My accountant said that they sometimes train new auditors on very small companies before sending them off to larger ones.

So, an audit itself isn't a red flag, the result of the audit is more interesting. Did the tax bill change, and if so, in who's favor, and how much? In general, the IRS probably won't do an audit unless they feel that there is a significant amount to be recovered, my case tied up an auditor for 3 days so essentially cost them money (It cost me money too, I had to pay my accountant).

I think for most average Americans, the more common thing is to get a letter from the IRS saying that they computed your taxes differently than what you filed, and here's what we think you really owe us. That's more like a computer generated audit.

I want a complete list of all the parking tickets he's ever received.

Being audited doesn't really mean anything. The reason why most people aren't audited is because they have taxes automatically deducted. There are a number of practices which can greatly increase your chance of being audited - such as running a sole proprietorship. Being audited doesn't mean that you've done anything wrong, just that uncle sam needs a closer look.

Yeah, when you have a ton of money and infinitely complex taxes, you'll eventually get audited.

Yep, I know that being audited doesn't really mean anything. On the other hand, the implication of his choice of words is that he's been audited more than once... which I wouldn't think would normally happen, unless the IRS is suspicious of something...

Bleah. Just means he's rich, and has all kinds of international deals and whatnot that the IRS likes to peek at. They go where the money is... penny ante tax cheats fall under the radar. Gazillionaires get watched like hawks.

Business has been audited.
There was a lot of "funny money" floating around and the high percentage of audits locally were supposedly "coincidental" to the law and legal investigations.

Three days and a wrist slap for sloppy record keeping on tax exempt paper work.
