cbelt, swampy, and the troll need to knock on doors!

President Obama is doing well in a swing state poll of likely voters. I've only seen the article about it, I haven't read through the poll, yet. In the past, I've considered Quinnipiac to be slightly below top tier in quality.

Knocking on doors in Florida is a great way to get yourself killed.

Romney has to have Florida. Makes me wonder if he'll do a Hail Mary and pick Rubio for his running mate.

Time for Gov. Scott and his crew to figure out more ways to throw likely Democratic voters off the rolls.

Scott would be the perfect Dark Horse. Really dark.

But I think he's going to go with Rob Portman.

That would explain why I'm getting robocalls from Portman already. You'd think it's November already. I get perhaps 4-6 robocalls a day. I'm sure it's just going to get worse.

Regarding this poll, your statement does not appear to be true. There are substantial undecided, but Gov. Romney's unfavorables outweigh his favorables, while the opposite is true for President Obama.

Portman seems like the perfect VP pick to me. Ohio's economy is doing better than most, so he can attach himself to that. He has foreign trade experience and can shore up Romney's increasingly obvious lack of talent on the foreign stage. He's got excellent academic cred. He's no drama to the point of being boring- and I think that's important for Romney and Republicans in general given their last VP pick.

Rasmussen today

A president’s Job Approval rating is one of the best indicators for assessing his chances of reelection. Typically, the president’s Job Approval rating on Election Day will be close to the share of the vote he receives. Currently, 47% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's job performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) at least somewhat disapprove

It's true that Obama's national average in polls right now shows him getting 47% of the vote. However, that does not mean that Romney has 53%. Romney's national average is 45%.
It's a very tight race, really up in the air at this point. But Obama has a slight edge in popular vote and a larger edge in electoral count.

In all fairness, Swampy said Obama's approval ratings are "tanking", which speaks more to a trend than the current standing. That said, I don't see evidence that his approval ratings are tanking, but rather they've dropped over his whole term. They look pretty stable over the last 6 mos. though. kj.

While swampy's citation may reflect a national opinion, the poll I linked, as LD states, seeks to reflect the ability to capture a national electoral victory.

I don't think we can pay too much attention to polls at this point. It's only just August 1. Personally, I think Romney's going to go down in popularity but it is just too soon to get excited about poll numbers.

65.5 (2/2009) to 47.9 (8/2012) could be called tanking, yes. I like Obama but let's not pretend his approval rating isn't pretty crapola right now.

Actually not so. Prior to the Republican primaries you'd be hard pressed to find a single poll showing Obama with anything close to a 50% approval rating.

That was Romney's (or any other Republican's) strength. That Obama is now polling above 50% spells the worst case scenario for the right wing that Romney decided to join. The end result might be that he'd better served to have waited until Obama was done.

See any number of also rans - Nixon being the exception - who later went on to become President? Any cites prior to 100 years ago don't count.

Yes, I wasn't realizing how much a percentage point (or two, or three...or four) is. Big difference between 46 and 50%. It does appear to have been pretty steady though, for quite some time.

Ha, entomology. That was funny. "Tanking" must be a regional thing? Or maybe it's just old, and August is young? kj.
