Is this place getting too snarky?
Posted by: $tevie
Date: August 02, 2012 01:01PM
Why are we all so ready to pick fights with each other lately? Is it the heat, the drought, the lack of affordable fruit? I feel like we haven't seen this much fighting and feuding since the old "you forgot to use OT" days at dealmac.

Yeah. Might be the summer heat; people do tend to get grumpier.

One factor: the mods allowing you-know-who back in, whose comments only provoke snarkiness.

As for myself: I'm well aware that I tend to go straight for the jugular. It troubles me sometimes. I suppose it's that talking about issues on an internet forum is a lot like talking politics in a bar: can be fun, might get ugly, and mostly it's totally pointless. So what seems to catch my attention isn't necessarily the issue, it's when someone says something really stupid and/or indefensible, like when their proposition is based on false information or unknown facts, or when it's based on blind loyalty to an ideology.

So, enough introspection. Here's some kittens.

I'm beginning to distance myself from this side. There are too many conversations are on subjects that I find silly - tiny peripheral minutia that partisans blow up to insane heights of importance...

And like Uncle Wig - too often I take an attitude that is well out of my real life character and I don't like that...

I am as guilty of the snark as anybody,
however,
I would like to see people stop using someone's cancer as a stick to beat her with
~it's rude and unfeeling.
and
I would like to see people stop calling people trolls because they disagree with them.
We've got one troll and we all know who that is,
otherwise can we use other good insults.
There are plenty of them out there -- and if anyone needs any ideas, I can surely help with a couple of suggestions!

And now back to the Cute Overload portion of our program:

Actually I don't: ignore makes life better.

And $tevie, you are quite correct: differing opinion does not a troll make. Screwing up every thread does.

I think it's simply that the presidential campaign is in full swing and a new "story" or attack ad comes out every day. This brings out all sorts of fodder for disagreement on a daily basis, especially when attack ads or postings that misrepresent candidates' positions are used.

And why are you bringing my German heritage into this? More xenophobia?

I hope she and her family surround themselves with people who have her best interest at heart, and that she gets all the (positive, worthwhile) glory of others who have achieved at that level.

You guys should read the snarky comments made by the folks at Excalibur gym in Va Beach. They are so trying to take credit for her abilities. She was good, naturally talented, but not Olympic class until she switched to her current trainer. In 2 years he took her to where she is now. She would not have made the team by a long shot if she had stayed. Yet these Excalibur jerks are all over the local news sounding like total sour grapes.

(Yeah, she's among a bunch of local olympians in several sports)

i assume you're being facetious but, as i parent, i know that the context of that quip is so true. in order to succeed in a sport like gymnastics - which is expensive to pursue - one has to have tremendous financial and emotional support and sacrifice from one's family. no matter what your gifts we all stand on someone's shoulders.
