Here's a better explanation of what's going on. And it is a controversial deal due to the amount of money being spent.

But it's not outsourcing. GM is a global company and soccer is a global game, so the concept makes sense although the price tag is insane.

What exactly is the problem?

ManU is owned by an American family, the Glazers. As an organization it's about to go public on the NYSE.

ManU is the most popular team in the world's most popular and most watched sport. Advertising on their jerseys is solid gold. This is a huge contract, but it seems like pretty smart marketing move to me.

GM sells cars outside the USA, as you've probably heard. Are they allowed to advertise outside the US?

Absolutely ridiculous. Outsourcing my butt. Rush was prattling on about this in the five minutes I could stand to listen to him Wednesday when I was on the road. It's an advertising deal. What utter derp.

But it's about soccer, which is that socialist/commie/unAmerican sport, you know.
I doubt any of the Rushbots will give a hoot if "Chevy" gets blazoned across the chests of NBA players. That's capitalism, after all.

I didn't hear Rush's program but I still don't understand the deal when they pulled ads from Facebook ....and as a side note big shakeup in the company hi ups.

Leadership changes are common in corporate America, in this case it's one person losing his job, correct? Is that a "big shakeup?"
The article Stevie links suggests his departure is not related to this deal, which would have been approved by the top brass anyway, it's to the fact that GM's performance related to marketing hasn't been what they wanted over the past few years.
GM said they left facebook because the advertising is not paying off. Why would they keep spending money where it isn't working?

Even in Rush Limbaugh's fevered and imaginative mind I cannot imagine how it is possible to conflate an advertising deal with outsourcing. Sam, outsourcing means sending production and jobs outside your country. This has absolutely nothing to do with either production or jobs. Rush is snake oil salesman and you have been fleeced once again. Perhaps you need to step away from the am radio.

The business story is all over the news, but the outsourcing angle is flying around the wingnutosphere, following Rush's lead of course. So Sam could have heard that any number of places. Here's one golden comment from the sludge pond. This one manaaged to get "unions" in there too.

"600 million of your dollars just got outsourced to a foreign soccer team....in hopes of ginning up sales that will also help foreign GM plants, dealers, lenders and their employees.

Incidently, UAW is "going all in" to organize foreign GM plants.

Big Fed picking winners and losers is slippery and slimy slope. "

Doesn't GM still owe American tax payer's for the bailout?

The Glazers are the snakeoil salesmen. They keep letting franchise players (Tampa Bay Bucs) go on free agency because they don't want to pay for top players. This has been especially true since they bought ManU. It's a joke down here in Florida that the Glazers run a farm team for all the Super Bowl bound teams.

If you don't stand for something, you'll probably fall for anything.

Yeah Malcolm's crying all the way to the bank. ManU is the most valuable sports team in the world and he's made a huge profit since he bought it.
As for the Bucs, maybe it'd help if people showed up for games? They have the second lowest attendance of any team in the NFL, and low cost players are the only thing that keeps the team profitable. (This is a business, after all. ) The team is at the rebuild stage so they should feel lucky to have a wealthy owner who can stick it out and not sell.

Anyway, yes the US holds GM stock. Don't you want them therefore to sell as many cars as possible and make as much profit as possible? To do that, they need to advertise. And they just landed the most valuable advertising space on the planet, ManU jerseys. Let's hope it works out.

The thing to remember is that GM has an advertising budget same as anyone else, and the money came out of their advertising budget. it's not like they had to raid the corporate treasury to pay for it. They recently dropped Facebook advertising and bowed out of next year's SuperBowl, so they seem to be shifting their ad dollars around and this is one of the places it has landed.
