Romney's intro:
this guy is intellectual, honest, humble, a servant, known to many, nobody doubts his good character, etc.

IOW< this is not Sarah Palin.

Obama made the same mistake when he introduced Biden. Glass houses?

He did, but corrected himself right away. Romney just let it go seemingly unaware of his mistake and Ryan walked in to that intro - I thought it was perfect actually because I think people are thinking of him for 2016.

The Romney campaign is going to try to frame Ryan as the good Catholic boy next door. The Obama campaign is going to dredge up every quote from Ryan of his admiration for the social darwinist, atheist Ayn Rand and hang her around his neck.

I wonder how the Catholic bishops are going to deal with this - the Ryan budget plan doesn't seem to be consistent with church teachings about helping poor people.

These nuns don't care for Ryan or his plan.

“It’s immoral!” the 81-year-old Catholic nun said of the Wisconsin Republican’s fiscal plan, as the crowd gathered on Capitol Hill erupted in cheers. Another nun, Sister Simone Campbell, denounced the proposed cuts to food stamps, child care, and other programs for the needy. “That’s not Christian,” said Campbell, who leads a Catholic social justice lobby called NETWORK. Campbell reminded her supporters of the Bible’s teachings on charity and compassion—but threw in a dash of realism as well. “Sisters don’t just do it with grace,” she explained. “For heaven’s sake, we need money!”

The nuns were concluding a two-week bus tour through nine swing states to protest the Ryan budget proposal, contending that it undermined Catholic teachings to serve the poor and vulnerable. Their rally on Monday outside the United Methodist Church’s D.C. offices was peppered with prayers, gospel songs, and Bible verses (Isaiah 58:7: “Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless.”)

Yes after he moved away from the podium and Ryan made his big entrance as "next President of the United States." That's the funny part.
Don't know if Romney realized his mistake or someone pointed it out.
I enjoyed the laugh, that is all.

The Catholic Bishops are obviously pretty darn conservative about a lot of things* and have been critical of those kinds of activities from the nuns in the past. Now the stakes are a lot higher - will they tell the nuns to knock it off?

*i.e., their bogus outrage about the supposedly massive infringement of religious freedom due to the federal requirement of their church affiliated institutions to pay for birth control prescription coverage. I say it is bogus because many states have had that requirement for years and the bishops didn't raise a big stink about it.

We need to see if this forum can be set to bounce-to-top so we can have one monster "Romney Goof" thread.

.

The Bishops have already put their stamp of disapproval on the Ryan plan, in pretty strong terms:

“The Catholic bishops of the United States recognize the serious deficits our country faces, and we acknowledge that Congress must make difficult decisions about how to allocate burdens and sacrifices and balance resources and needs,” Bishop Blaire added. “However, deficit reduction and fiscal responsibility efforts must protect and not undermine the needs of poor and vulnerable people. The proposed cuts to programs in the budget reconciliation fail this basic moral test.”

So Romney/Ryan will ignore that, and continue on their "Obama is assaulting religious freedom" journey. I wish them luck with that.

It will be interesting to see if the bishops pursue their disapproval of the Ryan budget with the same zeal they have applied to the religious freedom thing.

When you don't have anything but one disastrous record piled on top of another disastrous record to run on even an untied shoelace will seem earth-shattering.
