"like a swarm of bees to a watermelon"

No, there is nothing racist going on with the South Carolina voter ID law, nothing at all.

"Garrard Beeney, who represented the civil rights groups, presented emails sent to and from (State Rep. and voter ID law author) Clemmons’ personal account between 2009 and 2011, when he was working on the law. One, from a man named Ed Koziol, used racially charged rhetoric to denounce the idea that poor, black voters might lack transportation or other resources necessary to obtain photo ID. If the legislature offered a reward for identification cards, “it would be like a swarm of bees going after a watermelon,” Koziol wrote.

Beeney asked Clemmons how he had replied to this email. Clemmons hesitated a moment before answering, “It was a poorly considered response when I said, ‘Amen, Ed, thank you for your support.’”

Beeney also contended that Clemmons, a Republican, wrote the law to suppress Democratic votes. Blacks in South Carolina typically vote Democratic. Beeney asked Clemmons whether he remembered distributing packets of peanuts with cards that read “Stop Obama’s nutty agenda and support voter ID.”

Clemmons said he did not, though Beeney said he had testified in June that he did."

I don't see how they can keep trying to pretend this isn't about disenfranchising minorities!

This is coming out because South Carolina sued the DOJ after they blocked this law, saying it didn't comply with the Voting Rights Act.

Be careful what you wish for, South Carolina.

That's the way it's done, don't you know.

Deny! Deny! Deny! Truth doesn't matter.

Meanwhile in Florida ... anybody catch the story about the conservative Republican lobbyist in Tampa who has now decided that the voter ID laws are not a good thing ?

"Trip to my polling place shows barriers at work"

"I am what they call a super voter, meaning I almost always vote. I am also an African-American conservative. And, as a longtime Tallahassee-based lobbyist, I get to see the Legislature up close from a front-row seat. Like many, I assumed that the efforts to purge voters did not relate to me. I was wrong. My eyes are now fully open, and what they have seen is not pretty. A disturbing thing happened to me while voting on Aug. 14 in the Florida primary."

There's an app waiting to happen... "Republican Auto-correct". It would automatically change any word/phrase that could potentially out them for the hateful racist jerks they are to something less obvious.

Maybe that will open some eyes, but I doubt it.

I've never in 32 years of voting been asked to show ID at a polling place. It's absurd.
There will be a lot of stories to tell on Nov. 7 of people who get tripped up by this thing. And maybe when it turns out that quite a few of them are Republicans who didn't get to vote, some of these states will go...whoops.

This is a little off the subject, but close enough:

In 1972, I had moved to a new town in August. It was my first time to vote. I poll worker was showing me the ballot and came to a list of about 15 people for city council or something like that. I was supposed to vote on 6, I think. She knew I was new in town and pointed to one of the names and said, "This one's black." I have never checked a box so hard in my life.

They won't care. It's simply and purely a game of numbers designed to allow them to hold onto power despite that they don't represent anywhere near a majority of their constituents aim and desires.
