AP "Fact Check"

You could not tell if you are reading a so called Fact Check by AP or a DNC ad. Instead of pointing out what facts they checked, they start out with "but Ryan himself....", just like school kids brawl.

"Ryan's claim ignores the fact that Ryan himself incorporated...."

"Ryan himself asked for stimulus funds shortly after Congress approved...."

"Ryan himself voted for an auto bailout under President George W. Bush...."

I just don't understand why all these Democrats are watching the Republican convention. Bored ? And then run around quoting from Republican speeches. It's like Atheists quoting the Bible. WTF ?

I have long understood that speeches at conventions are 'for the faithful', and always contain a nicely high fibrous content of BS. So as a result I ignore them.

You're not interested in the people who want to be VP/Pres? The junk Ryan spewed is the centerpiece of the Romney/Ryan campaign, and it's based on falsehood. It's not some random BS you won't here again, it's essentially the Republican platform this year.

It's obvious that millions of GOP'ers watched Obama's speech in '08 because they couldn't stop wetting themselves over the Grecian columns.

I grew up watching the conventions of both parties. Our whole family sat in the living room together, watching. For one thing, conventions used to be fun and exciting. Plus, with gavel to gavel coverage, you got to watch the platform being built and the delegates voting on things.

Nowadays both conventions are just a dog and pony show -- however, the dog and the pony are running for President and Vice President, so that makes it important.

I must confess to not watching this year. I can play the speeches I'm interested in on youtube more conveniently than anything available on broadcast TV.

Lemon Drop, I understand. But I don't go a listen avidly to the preaching at other churches, because I know that their sermons are specific to their people.

They are not watching because they like what they hear. They are watching so they can come here the next day and nitpick. 95% of what he said cannot be refuted(and hasn't been) and the other 5% can be debated.

I may not be affected by what your church does, but I'm sure as heck affected by what political leaders do, whether they are in my party or not.
So as an involved citizen who wants to be informed and decide for myself, as opposed to letting pundits tell me what to think, I'm paying attention.
I think it's odd that you insult us simply for paying attention.

95%, eh? pretty precise numbers.

i like refuting the 'czars' nonsense that right-wingers like to spout nonsense about, how Obama has more than Bush.

Conventions were once worth watching. Nominations were not always preordained, floor fights and the expectation that something unexpected might happen made them interesting.

There hasn't been an interesting convention on either side since the primary voting system was adopted. If I want to be lied to I'll spend my time watching FoxNews or MSNBC.

Oh, no insult intended. I personally think, as noted above, that the useful content of these speechification is limited. But if you enjoy it, more power to you.

Conventions just aren't any fun any more for me.... too devoid of useful content.

I think seeing Ryan lay out the blueprint of the R/R campaign of lies is extremely edifying. And I imagine the Obama camp did, too, and will go into the debates ready to shoot each and every one of them down. I would hope that R/R has more to bring to the table than those lies or they are going to be killed in the debates.

I look forward to the Biden v. Ryan debate.

Even though Veep debate performance is fairly inconsequential to the election outcome, Joe is going to mop the floor with that kid.

Won't mean a thing and from what I've heard of the restrictions fronted from the Romney camp, that won't mean anything either. The turning point will be the ungodly amount of money unleashed during the runnup to voting.

The debate formats are set and the moderators will choose the topics. Romney has no say in that.
They are going to do 15 minutes per topic, which will be good. The candidates are going to have go beyond soundbites, and I suspect this will be tough for Romney who doesn't like to go into details too much.

Roger, you really just need a sound bite (I voted against it before I voted for it) or a concept (McCain is nuts) to catch the public's fancy and it can have a great influence. If Paul Ryan is a liar catches on, it is going to hurt their campaign regardless of dollars spent. Americans like their lying politicians to be more surreptitious about it.

an excerpt:

He attacked Obama for failing to keep open a Janesville GM plant that closed under Bush in 2008. He hit him for a credit-rating downgrade that S&P essentially blamed on GOP intransigence. He claimed that all taxpayers got from the 2009 stimulus was “more debt,” when most got a tax cut (and the stimulus is known to have saved between 1.4 and 3.3 million jobs). He derided the president for walking away from the Simpson Bowles commission deficit-cutting recommendations when Ryan himself, a commission member, voted against those recommendations.

He blamed Obama for a deficit mostly created by programs he himself voted for – from two wars, tax cuts, new Medicare benefits and TARP.

AMPA (The Borowitz Report)—In his speech to the Republican National Convention last night, Vice-Presidential nominee Paul Ryan test-drove what the Romney-Ryan campaign says will be a major theme for the 2012 Republican campaign: “lying about everything.”

“The question was, how many whoppers could you pack into one speech?” the campaign adviser Tracy Klugian said. “All I can say is, when Fox News accuses a Republican of lying, you know you’ve witnessed something historic.”

Mr. Ryan pronounced himself pleased with his performance, noting that he only strayed into the truth when he recited the names of his wife and children.

“That won’t happen again,” he laughed. “Call it opening-night jitters.”

As for Presidential nominee Mitt Romney, he said he was working “around the clock” to add additional lies to his speech tonight: “I’m no Paul Ryan, but, darn it, I’m going to do my best.”
